Hey, self-hosting people, need your help!

Could you recommend static site generators suitable for non-technical people? i.e. Ones that work without needing any command lines, that work entirely graphically.

(There's an odd paradox that static sites are technically much simpler but their editors are often harder to use.)

Happy birthday to Ursula K. Le Guin. "We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."

It's booberry o'clock

I am reminded again how in 1935, the US Congress passed a tax law that created a new top tax bracket of nearly 80%.

That tax bracket contained exactly one person, John D. Rockefeller, and was designed to stop him from causing so much trouble.

In case anyone needs the precedent.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot

A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Given how poignantly I'm discovering the loss of information on the internet this week, might I recommend Zotero to save snapshots of news and sites you might want to reference in the future?

I typically use it to format citations and bibliographies. But it has a snapshot feature. There's a plugin for most browsers, so you just click it while on the site, and it grabs the source info (sometimes poorly) along with a snapshot of the content -- the latter being a feature I took for granted until recently.

If I'd been doing that all along, I'd have everything I need today.

it’s advised that all system administrators should turn off all their systems

But is anyone else disgusted that it was the gas prices that moved a good chunk of the country and not the ethnic cleansing?

we got some antlers a while ago for the dogs, but they have long since lost interest in them. I soaked a couple in chicken stock and now they are interested (maybe too interested) in them again. I'm trying to encourage one of my dogs to chew stuff for his teeth so that's good.

The bad is one dog really thinks BOTH antlers should be his.

Okay. So. I was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer. It requires an immediate hysterectomy. However. I had to postpone because finances will not allow me to rest, and layoffs are happening at my music label.

As usual, I refuse to ask for help. It feels horrible. But so many of you have offered.

So. If you’d like to donate to “Project Hysterectomy: Yeet that Uterus and Heal 2026,” I’d be grateful.

Yes I should have been better about this from the start :/

How do y’all keep symptoms, medications, etc in a format you can refer to?

In order to treat a chronic health thing I have, I need to go back through paper journals, sporadic food diaries, 2 different tracking app records, my calendar, and maybe any paper records I kept to try to piece together when things happened over the last 7 years. I think I’ll probably stick it in a spreadsheet to start with, but I’m curious how others keep, refer to, and share this kind of data with health professionals

I find the notion that LLMs writing your code for you are just like having interns or junior engineers to be rather offensive.

Interns aren't there to do your menial work, they're there to learn new skills. Junior engineers are hired with the idea that they will become senior engineers, which requires you and your organization to invest in teaching them. Humans learn! They can get better!

But LLMs don't learn. So the comparison to LLMs is insulting to interns, juniors, and other people with less experience. And therefore a rather depressing view into software engineering culture.

(Separately, I also find it baffling that anyone would want to have a pseudo-conversation that involves no learning on the other side, but apparently that is just a personal quirk of mine.)

What you wish for immigrants, indigenous and the Black diaspora is exactly what I wish for you.
