My armchair analysis: “Today, Apple scanned my local files and those scanning programs attempted to talk to Apple APIs” is probably technically correct, but what mediaanalysisd does is things like OCR and object recognition (for keyword search). The author goes on to wildly speculate things about Apple sharing your data with US intelligence agencies.
So why is mediaanalysisd doing network requests? My own speculation: to download newer ML models.

I just looked and the report report is correct, mediaanalysisd sends a message upstream every time I double-clock on a photo in the Finder. It's really easy to imagine this being a symptom of Bad Things happening, and actually pretty hard to think of something innocent and useful.
For the moment I blocked it. Let's see if anything changes.

That's weird - over a the YComb discussion, everybody was like “mediaanalysisd has been around for years”. (Also some discussion about how they don't think it used to call home before Ventura.)

@briankrebs @chucker @kbarker @mmasnick @timbray @Edent I'm on 13.1 Ventura, it wasn't running until I opened an image in Preview. (A different process, photoanalysisd, was present when I opened Photos.)
