Where I’m heading: https://cosocial.info

Hey #Hachyderm folks, I’m outta here. Nothing against this instance, which IMHO has the best instance-local feed anywhere, but because I’m about to migrate to #CoSocial, which is a Canadian instance operated by a member-owned co-op. I think co-operatives are a super-attractive building block for the kind of Fediverse we want to inhabit. I blogged the details here: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2023/04/06/CoSocial

(For those I follow, pardon the re-follow notifications you’re about to get.)

It seems to me that when legislative majorities start to expel minority members for being too noisy, you’re looking at 50-foot letters of fire saying “FASCISM ALERT!” No?

OK, that ⬆️ settles it. Granted, this is *gasp* not conformant with various ISO standards, we’ll just have to live with that.

Of course, to be screen-reader friendly, we should always camel-case it: #CdnPoli. I tested with the (rather basic) built-in MacOS screen-reader and it said, quite properly, “see-dee-en-polly”.

Just booked the last two seats for the #Tetris #film and the whole row disappeared

Just got another #covid booster, BC is calling in everyone 60 & up. Also, although they’re not advertising this, anyone 18 & up with a special reason to worry.

This thing is not over… wear a mask when you’re in a public enclosed space unless you’re happy with the separation & ventilation.

The best-organized and -funded attempt to privatize Canadian health-care by installing a fast lane for rich people has finally, after years of litigation, failed: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/private-health-care-dr-brian-day-supreme-court-appeal-dismissed-1.6803463?cmp=rss

For those with a moderate-but-not obsessive interest in the AI/ML landscape, O’Reilly Radar has a useful what’s-up-now snapshot: https://www.oreilly.com/radar/radar-trends-to-watch-april-2023/

so it turns out that plants will scream when injured, at around the 40-80 khz range.

cats also have a hearing that tops out around the 80 khz range.

this means that when your cat is eating cat grass, they are secretly also hearing the grass scream at them as it's devoured.

anyway. happy monday everyone

I find myself saying "community-owned independent social media sites" rather than "fediverse" in mixed company because it gets a much better reaction (active interest rather than blank stares)

I realize that the venn diagram of the two does not overlap perfectly but the overlap is precisely the stuff I actually care about and I'd rather be inaccurate in a way that garners interest than similarly-inaccurate in a way that doesn't

Relaxing in front of a ball game, wondering why, given that 1080p has been ubiquitous since 2012-ish, that seems to remain the best resolution sports broadcasters can manage in 2023.
