Hey, friends—I'm excited to share my new project!

I call it Tupo. It's a daily logic puzzle with roots in sudoku, where every cell has to have a unique color-number combo.

Give it a shot if you like daily logic games, and let me know what you think!

@collinsworth I love the idea and aesthetics but I’m having trouble wrapping my head around the puzzle. Can you explain the reasoning behind this hint?

@jnkrtech Understandable to be tripped up there. Whenever you're having trouble, it's probably rule #3 (there has to be exactly one instance of every number + color combo).

Here, you've got a couple of possibilities for where your remaining 1's can go, but colors eliminate one of the options, leaving you with only that one space for a particular combination of the digit 1 with a certain color.

(FWIW you can press the hint button again to show the answer for that space; I worried that might not be obvious enough.)

@jnkrtech If you'd like a little stronger hint:

    ...

There's already a blue 1, and another 1 that can't be green, because it shares a row with a green tile already. So one of the unplaced 1's must be green.

@jnkrtech Nah that rule gets everyone. (If anything, I think it's harder for experienced sudoku players, because you have to un-train your brain to look at the board in the same old single dimension.)

@collinsworth I had a physical colour-based sudoku "toy" with a similar idea, but it was just a 4x4 colour grid, no numbers. This is next level!

I play at least one round of sudoku every day so it's definitely up my alley.

@collinsworth Pretty cool! It comes together very quickly in the second half of the game. It took me a minute to lock in, but then made perfect sense. I’m interested in what a harder difficulty will look like.

@collinsworth It took me another minute again to wrap my head around it even though I did yesterday. But then it came quickly.

Even though color is just another condition, my brain sees it as different dimension and that makes it more interesting.

@collinsworth Lovely! I just did my first puzzle and found it a lot of fun. 😊 Great job on the micro interactions! Is there supposed to be sound? I think that would’ve made it even more satisfying for me.

@collinsworth I fell in love with it instantly, thanks Josh for this wonderful game!

I really love that every puzzle - at least the one I've played - has an easy "ohh, only this colour can be in that row" type of starting move, and after that I immediately yell "and now what?!" 😆

really well made and nicely challenging 😊

@collinsworth absolutely, I love when a tile's characteristic clicks, "yeah, it makes sense that colour cannot be there" !

I'm not sure if it's by design, but so far I always filled out the colours first, then the numbers came naturally from that.

    @collinsworth I am loving this!

But am also very confused by this hint. I've had it show me the answer, but I still just can't see how to get there logically.

Another hint that helps explain why say a yellow 1 is incorrect would be so good to help me learn 😅

    Screenshot of the game:

Top row has a red square in 4th column.
Second row has a green 2 in column 1, rest empty.
Third row shows numbers 1, 2, blue 4, green 3 across the row.

Hint says of bottom right square (4th row, 4th column), "only one number + colour combo fits here"

@sarajw @collinsworth I’ve had to do a lot of hint showing too because I am so not a logical thinker.

And agreed, explaining why something is incorrect would help me see it way better.

Love the game and have been playing as much as I can to improve my logic!

@starshaped @sarajw Thank you both! FWIW: the learning curve is steep at first. I also had to use a lot of hints to get the hang of it. (Sometimes still do.)

Most of the time, these situations can be read as "you're close to a deduction on one layer, but you need to look at the other layer to get there."

Here, you have two 2's already filled in, and only two possible ways the remaining twos could go. The number layer alone could go either way, so cross-check it with the color layer. Would you still be able to get every color of 2 on the board both ways?

@collinsworth @starshaped I think I'm missing the ability to add pencil marks like I do for the harder sudokus - where you can eliminate say a pair of digits or colours from the rest of a row even if you don't know exactly which goes where yet.

That would probably be hard to implement here though!

@sarajw @collinsworth @starshaped oh yeah, those pencil marks on sudoku are super helpful.

@collinsworth @starshaped @sarajw lately I've been dining lately that I can tell which one it *should* be when I get down to two options, looking at the things that it can't be but I'm still sometimes having trouble on making the final jump as to why thats the answer. I'm sure it will start to become more natural

@McNeely @collinsworth @sarajw I’m hoping it does for me too, but I tried playing Clues by Sam for a bit and it was so, so hard and it made me think I don’t have the correct kind of brain to do these. That’s been the hardest thing for me, getting down on myself because I don’t feel like I’m good enough for these games. I fully know that’s a me thing, though!

@starshaped @McNeely @sarajw FWIW, I just pushed an update to make some of the hints clearer. Now, when the hint relates to a number+color combo, instead of showing you a square and telling you only one combo can go there, it tells you exactly what the combo is, and then has you find the one place where that combo can go.

I think that inversion provides a much clearer path from hint to solution, and so it should hopefully be a lot more helpful both for finding the next move, and for helping players learn how to see it on their own.

@starshaped in case it helps I was recently linked to a clues by Sam and I was like ugghhh no that's too much. It was late at night when I looked though, lol. It seemed like too much information.

I really enjoy games with very simple rules that can lead to intricate problems, rather than a lot of information that once processed, gives you the answer. If that makes sense?

@collinsworth I like the idea and can do the easy puzzles with ease. But once I go to Medium level there's an abyss opening up and I don't understand the hints, or even the solution if I click Show and I'm totally lost.

Would it be possible to have a difficulty between easy and medium, or to have an explanation somewhere that goes beyond the cryptic hints?
