Sigh… I think I just can't spell.

I keep typing out “certaintly” because apparently my brain wants to mix “certainty” and “certainly” all in one go. Not helping, brain! 😤

I'm not balding evenly so I trim a couple times a week with a little shaving machine for my head.

One part, between the circular blades "frame", and the actual motor/handle, is a little broken (tiny plastic piece worn off from years of use), so I reached out to the manufacturer.

They can't send me that one piece, so they want me to cut the charger's cord, send a photo, and they'll replace the whole thing. I'm to discard/recycle the old one.

I appreciate it but also… why so wasteful? 😩

I updated how I generate my OG images to a single page (https://github.com/chriskirknielsen/dotcom-2024/blob/main/src/content/og.vto), thanks to @zachleat's single-page idea (https://www.zachleat.com/web/open-graph-easy-build/). I end up with 121 fewer files, nice. And the build times?

Before: 1x OG page per page
➡️ Local cold start (3x avg): 4.613s average
➡️ Netlify build: 31s

After: 1x OG page for all pages
➡️ Local cold start (3x avg): 4.637s average
➡️ Netlify build: 31s

~~Eleventy~~ BuildAwesome is just too freakin' fast to make any difference. 💀

This kinda flew under the radar but I am relieved to see @firefoxwebdevs reverted course on the `::-webkit-scrollbar` thing: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Firefox/Releases/156#css

Hey nerds: what's the best way to run an old PHP5+MySQL+Apache project on a Mac?
- XAMPP: latest is running PHP8 and replacing the build with PHP5 is… not accessible as a quick vanity project.
- MAMP: I already used up my free trial apparently trying to do this years ago? So not a viable solution.
- Devilbox: sounds promising but it's using Docker, smells like trouble.
Other options? FOSS preferred. Thanks! (I remember using WAMP on Windows, that was good!)

(just noticed that Chrome no longer places the view transition origin in the correct spot by the Themes button, but that seems to have happened before my code change… ah, it's always something!)

While the debate about bi- or tri-state theme toggles rages on, I just rewrote my, uh, deca-state theme picker's logic to be more reusable, and decouple some stuff so I can put theme switching buttons outside the theme picker without weird hacks, like here: https://chriskirknielsen.com/colophon/#dawn

I might just have spent as much time on this specimen page than on the font itself but it's finally out in the world: Peritel, a nostalgia-fuelled retro typeface. I'll do a follow-up post on my blog at some point, soon-ish.

Test it out here — I'd love to hear your thoughts: https://chriskirknielsen.com/fonts/peritel/

I ignored an issue in my local #11ty / #BuildAwesome setup for over a year, and figured out I had backed myself into a corner with #Vento's cache… but I fixed it: https://chriskirknielsen.com/blog/vento-includes-caching-rabbit-hole/

A #CSS selector I just wrote:
```css
.card:has(.card-content):is(:hover, :focus-within:nth-child(1 of :is(:hover, :focus-within)):nth-last-child(1 of :is(:hover, :focus-within))) { /*...*/ }
```
Selects the card (with content inside) which is either hovered, or has focus and is the only element with focus or hover (I don't want a focused card to be active if another is hovered).

I wouldn't mind a `:only-child(of [selector])` pseudo-class to make this leaner but… this works!

Server switch = #introduction time! 👋

I'm Chris, a front-end developer (and CSS nerd) who used to be a graphic designer.

I'm Danish, grew up in France, and live in the US, so I love languages (+ I know some Italian, and picked up Japanese again via Duolingo).

I'm infatuated with 80s aesthetics (neon! VHS!), and like being creative. I make (made 👀) music (synths are cool!), and enjoy puns, video games, movies, and reading books sluggishly.

Oh and here's my web site: https://chriskirknielsen.com
