NOT KNOWING SOMETHING
IS NEVER
SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF

Hey all,

Im looking for any academics who may be able to help someone from Gaza get enrolled in a European University on scholarship. Please let me know if you can help or if you know of anyone who could help.

Huh. The habit of not giving credit on the internet sure has let a lot of AI-acted-not-me framings flourish hasn’t it.

Generated code introduces such strange problems. Well architected code, complete and documented, fit for purpose.

The wrong purpose.

And it’s easier to start over than it is to edit toward the adjusted purpose.

Articles like this continue to misunderstand why the CISO role exists in the first place.

Splitting the role into 'GRC/Risk' and 'Technical/Defenses' doesn't magically solve the tension between business velocity and security controls. It just dilutes CISO authority, fractures budget control, and creates a perpetual turf war over who actually owns enterprise risk.

When you split the function, you don't reduce executive complexity, you just push the job of arbitrating technical security trade-offs onto a CEO who hired a CISO precisely so they wouldn't have to do it themselves.

This. The problems are very real! And we need to deal with them!

But at their core _these are useful technologies_.

Disruptive, and we’re not navigating that at all well. And we’re letting the tech industry run roughshod over everything as always.

But. We can use them well.

If you want to live in a congested and irrelevant city 10 years from now—keep on building freeways to the suburbs.

If you want to live in a prosperous and livable city 10 years from now—invest in the best transit you can today.

The thing you want is called either “Information Architecture” or more often, “Content Strategy” which is what information architecture is when it grows up: not just an organizational system, but bending organizations _into_ good systems.

So basically, if you care about the web, it’s time to get good at information architecture and develop relationships with experts for when it’s relevant to bring them in.

And while apps are not much better, they are at least given the purview of A Designer, usually a much more singular entity than manages The Website.

Of course apps even more than the web are subject to design-by-metrics. So they become Orwellian surveillance and manipulation machines instead.

Hot take, the web is dying because people do not respect or even know that information architecture is a thing, and that there are experts in the field.

How sensible!

I don't think the big platforms are going anywhere. But the people who made them interesting in the first place keep quietly walking out the side door, and writing a post about it on their way out.

Woot. New shift cables on the bike (again: Enviolo, the new design is better but it’s still not great)

It shifts so well right now I thought it was broken at first.

kill me now the robot is speaking colloquially at me and if it had hands it would be hand-waving.

So much this. So much destruction in already-weakened technical education.

Posting this again since despite the mass of confident of “I will never use #ai / #llm / #llms but also I know everything about how they work and everybody using them doesn’t know how to engineer” posts on my timeline triggered me again.

Try me, I’m willing to spend 4h on whatever.

If you can confidently state that everybody using llms is brain broken and “lost”, it should be pretty easy to show how broken and bad whatever I produce is going to be?

Not to say “don’t block people”, but the more chat-like a platform is (which Mastodon is solidly in the middle of), blocking creates this weird effect where someone is talking to you, and only the people around you can see. It means someone can be abusive, the target not receive it, but most of the damage done by making the surroundings unsafe or hostile. And done naively, the target never even knows.
