The great Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh would have been 100 this year. When he was 35, he had an epiphany while at the library that revealed to him the meaning of life: https://t.co/eEcGieSgss
For all my tech friends in Ottawa who are working on passion projects, there's an interesting event happening on Nov 11 called "The Feedback Loop" where creators meet to share and gather feedback on projects.
I'll be there to see what people are working on!
this is what komorebi looks like in real life
someone ran 80 AIs for a total of 12 hours analyzing the software and then sent me an email with dozens of recommendations, they were good suggestions and it felt reassuring that no issues with the core safety were found, all were theoretical attack vectors or loose settings that could be abused. the core encryption works well.
ReMemory is software I built to store important data safely for catastrophic scenarios, yesterday I made a new release with security and UX improvements. https://eljojo.github.io/rememory/

Check out the @tag's Draft Finding on "Installing Websites Must Be Easy": https://w3ctag.github.io/install-finding/. A core point is that it explicitly calls out hiding installation behind a Share button as not being sufficiently discoverable.
happy thanksgiving to everyone!

TIL that passkeys have support for remote attestation built-in. Once enabled by a service, without a US-American phone running software signed by a US-American company, on which you need to be signed in with your legal identity (thus rendering you unable to use it if you're sanctioned by the US), there is a pretty good chance that you'll be unable to use your passkeys in the future. That seems pretty damn terrible.
Don't use passkeys.
A bit of an overload with the Aurora pictures these last few days but I’ll take it while it’s here! This was at 20:30 last night in Aberdeenshire and by far the brightest display of the week. Half an hour before and fifteen minutes later it was raining…… #Aurora #Aberdeenshire #Scotland
komorebi recreates the feeling you get when sitting under a tree, feeling the shadows, the inner calm. the world organized chaotically scrambles as the wind blows, and then peacefully goes back into its proper arrangement, the way nature wants it to be

Hiiii! After unexpectedly finding myself without a job for the first time in my professional career, I am looking for a new role effective immediately - one where I can do good, period.
🌟 PREFERRED ROLES (non-exhaustive!):
▪️Writer: technical, reports, newsletters, deep dives, articles
▪️Teacher/tutor: #German, #linguistics, language study; data analytics & literacy, #statistics
▪️Coach: #academia to what’s beyond; personal development; organization; task & project management; app setups & ecosystems
▪️Data analyst / data scientist
▪️Researcher / policy #analyst
🏢 PREFERRED INDUSTRIES & AREAS:
▪️Non-profit/not-for-profit & #advocacy. Broadly speaking: more just, sustainable, more good
▪️Tutoring, coaching, education (software, tools, instruction), academia
▪️Civic good, municipal affairs, local journalism, urbanism, environment/ecology
▪️Small tech/tech for good, FOSS/FLOSS, privacy, digital sovereignty
▪️Disaster management/prevention, emergency operations
(I have work, volunteer, and/or education/training experience in all of these categories - happy to share more!)
💪🏼 I’LL BE A FANTASTIC FIT IF:
▪️You suspect there’s a story in a heap of #data, but don’t know what it is - or how to coax it out. I’ll find it for ya.
▪️You need great visuals and tailored communication for any audience: clear academic reports, engaging tech newsletters, gentle introductions to complex topics, keynotes - I love ‘em all.
▪️You need someone to dig deep. I naturally follow up on every “huh, that’s odd - let me see what’s really going on there!”
▪️You want a critical thinker who gives honest advice. You’ll get the real deal.
▪️You like saying what you mean and talking to each other like real people. I can speak corporate, but I’d prefer leaving that seven-layer dip of jargon behind!
▪️Bonus: You suspect corporate AI may soon be unaffordable for most organizations, or the bubble may burst, and need someone who can do excellent work without chatbot crutches if needed.
⛔️ NOT LOOKING FOR:
▪️Roles where I’m expected to rubber-stamp work, go through the motions, or “put the data fries in the bag.”
▪️Cultures where manufactured emergencies are the norm and there’s no time to think, explore, or dig deep.
▪️Jobs where you can’t tell me what good I’ll do or where my positive impact will be.
🖥️ PREFERRED SETTING:
▪️Remote, flexible hours
▪️Contracts/project work; very open to a portfolio-style career
▪️Hybrid or “we get together sometimes” roles in the #Edmonton area
▪️I’m not chasing the corporate ladder; impact matters more. If it’s a good fit, I don’t care whether it comes with a “Senior” label.
#boostOK, and if you do, I’ll send all the good vibes so there may never again be an unexpected item in your bagging area. 💜

i’m working on “fall” as a feature for my tree simulator, coming soon
I’ve published a blog post at Pedall, the Brompton dealer and Canadian distributor. It’s about getting to and from Toronto for cancer treatment using Brompton + GO Train. It's a pretty joyous way to travel! And it's not the 401!
https://www.pedaal.com/dispatches/tackling-cancer-on-a-brompton-folding-bicycle/
I was recently diagnosed with cancer. TL;DR: I’m doing well and treatment is working. I’m much luckier than many.
I’ve decided to share the way that cycling and public transit have become such an important part of my cancer journey and the overwhelmingly positive impact they’ve had on my mental and physical well-being. My hope is that it can show other recently diagnosed people that there can be hope, though I recognize that we are all are on our own different journeys.
just got back home, spent 10 days meditating in a silent vipassana retreat. it was life changing, I highly recommend it. https://www.dhamma.org/en/index
