    🐿️late night thought: FOSS guys make a big deal about free open source stuff and GPL licensing and owning your PC and all that, yet this all seems to have gone out the window now that they can happily pay big money to a corporation for a proprietary program to generate stolen code

    🐿️I dont know or want to know what kind of mental gymnastics they're doing to justify allowing the stolen code machine to have a place at the table where licensing says you have to guarantee your code is not stolen lmao, that's like smoking cigarettes on break at the explosives factory

    @roxy I never got the sense that FOSS guys were particularly keen on copyrights, that is, if we could kind of forget the whole thing, a lot of people would be happy

    @roxy

    I have a photo somewhere of my 2016 trip to the Northern Territory (Australia).

    One one side of the road was a petrol station.

    Just across the road: FIREWORKS FOR SALE!

    @roxy@chitter.xyz additional thought: the same developers who "need" their projects sponsored so they can survive while developing them can suddenly pay 100€/month to a corporation for this proprietary program to generate stolen code

    @mjdxp @roxy It’s certainly a paradigm shift.

    But I’m going to be optimistic: it’s a good thing that the cruft of a movement steered by the 1980’s MIT media lab, funded from the US military budget, and explicitly backed by Epstein, finds its sunset.

    A new generation of code artists is free to make their own culture. Code as music samples, code as the endless conversation of the arts, code as science, code as fun, code for people.

    @autumn @roxy nah, people are just going to AI code everything and no one will know what their code actually does unless the AI tells them what it means

    @roxy I keep harping on this too. I don't know why people are ok directly paying the companies doing the horrible things. Like. This is the easiest boycott ever.
