My argument is that AI/LLMs are, for all their faults, a useful tool.
And like any tool. The ethics of its use are determined by its wielder.
An argument to the extreme is:
A gun is a tool. It can be used to harm someone who is innocent and likewise it can be used to stop an attacker. How it is used is up to the person holding the gun.
It is undeniable how useful the tool (AI/LLMs) is.
It is here to stay. The ethics of its use are up to the individual user.

Hell I used it to create a bunch of flyers for an event recently. And I feel none the less for it.
That's not "theft". Would you consider it stealing, to draw a string of banner flags and confetti from memory?

Overall AI is a useful tool. And it will continue to grow.
At this point it is an inevitability. There are far greater ethical concerns considering AI. Greater than me using AI to generate colorful banners.

@txtechnician AI has intrinsic issues that make it best avoided at this time entirely, but to be honest I'm more thrown off by your assertion that the art is both too simple to count as stealing and also too complicated for you to have done yourself.
You don't know how to draw confetti? Or a triangle? You couldn't find clip art of a backpack?
This level of learned helplessness is honestly baffling to me.

@txtechnician there's this real need from people who use AI to frame everything as simultaneously too trivial to put time into caring about or to deserve compensation, but also way too complicated and hard for anyone to ever expect them to do it themselves.
Give me a dozen clip art posters or posters drawn by students, or even just skip the graphics entirely and print out a word doc if you don't care about the rest.
"I can't draw confetti" is not a good enough reason to use AI.

@txtechnician @dalias @limebar There’s no ethical use of a plagiarism machine that converts our limited natural resources into slop with the long-term goal of replacing human jobs.
But you’ve shown in this thread that you have a very different idea of what constitutes ethical behaviour, so I’m not surprised you believe there is.
