Wow. I knew at some point society would collapse to the degree that humanity would be required to transition whatever remaining technology we have left to follow the principles of #permacomputing . I just never thought that day would be upon us so soon.

@hllizi that’s true. The remainder of Earth’s glaciers and ice caps may all melt before then.

@hllizi I guess there could be other reasons for why there is a decent chance RAM will become so cheap people will use it for floor tiles or whatever. Maybe the AI bubble will burst and all of the datacenters which had been built but now have no chance of a return on investment will have their assets sold-off, and a glut of cheap RAM will suddenly be available to the market.
The thing about #Permacomputing is that it always has been today, not tomorrow, imho. I don't see it as a practice of prevention (others might differ) but of reflection towards actual necessity, in order to not make it mandatory in the future. How much computation do we really need?
That said, the memory shortage/capacity thing is really unnecessary.
@thgie this is true. I like to think I live the philosophy of permacomputing myself, at least at home. Although I am not quite as acetic as some people, I do like my modern Linux on my modern Mini-ITX motherboard, with a nice graphical user interface. I do try to make my computer self-reliant though, I avoid web apps and prefer local everything.
