@aparrish @emenel @scr Learning how to code and how computer systems/hardware works is a wonderful way to expand your thinking and understanding of the world. It challenges you to solve problems in constrained systems and can be lots of fun too. I learned a lot of programming concepts with robot battle programming games, video games, and working with resource limitations. Computer science is more philosophy of thinking, with applied skills/craft as a second thing (in my opinion)

@aparrish the argument we're personally fond of is that everyone should have the opportunity to learn how computers work, for the same reason everyone should have the opportunity to learn how cars work

then again, the bar is pretty low, seeing as how "actually wanting to know whether or not something works, or is true" is considered a hardcore leftist position nowadays

I've grown up around FOSS folks so it never occured to me to have a Gmail account or anything. It just wasn't a serious option. Everyone around me self-hosted or used free software at the very least.

Facebook was a fad when I was like 13 and that's that. I was on Instagram for like a week as a teenager?

I can't remember using any of those for a prolonged period of time.

I've got news for anyone who thinks their Facebook account doesn't exist anymore...

I closed my account early (like 2012ish?). Got a stupid we are sorry to see you go email from them confirming it was done. Partner could confirm I was not listed anymore on Facebook. About 10 years later I started getting password reset attempt notifications. After a lot of these I went and logged in. Just logged in, everything is still there.

I'm now maintaining the login just to avoid identity theft.
