a good explanation of the causal dynamics is useful because it provides a framework for understanding what _actions_ are available to people who want to fight it

if you know WHY capitalism caused bad thing, you can figure out HOW to fix it

this is why, for instance, @pluralistic's Theory of Enshittification is so useful

by offering not just a word, but an entire framework for analyzing HOW certain things came about, there is a framework for HOW to fix it

its not "woe is me, things are shit"

its "what is to be done"

the explanation of anything bad as arising "because of capitalism" is a reflex of the left

and it's certainly often true, don't get me wrong

but the specifics of how "capitalism" entails "bad thing" are important to explain

@corbden That's a whole chunk of it! But I also think it's weird we shove kids into buildings (which they cannot leave and force them into rooms where they cannot leave even within the building) where, like, 90% of the population are also kids and there are very few options for adult mentors (and if they don't get along with any of them because they have limited numbers of adults with whom they can connect during that time, they are effectively stuck in a building where they may not feel safe or even cared for).

It's just a whole mess of nonsense about how we teach people to relate to each other... and then we pretend that it's a functional structure that allows kids to grow up into the adults that they're expected to be... even though they're not given many examples of what it even means to "be an adult" (or even what it can look like across multiple ages to "be a part of the community you're in").

Boy I gotta tell ya, this computer sure is committed to the bit.

As we packed up the equipment afterwards, one of flyers (who pitched in to help carry bins) "you're all so happy and enthusiastic!" about us volunteers.

Well, sure. We get to help people have fun, launching models they built hundreds of feet into the air.

A fine way to spend an afternoon.

I finally went to Las Vegas’s Neon Museum. It was so hot it wasn’t going to open until 9pm, which then got delayed to 9:30. Even at that hour, my iPhone kept telling me it was overheating, and my camera freaked out. But it was all worth it. This place is incredible.

Love the posts that are like "I believe the way that was structure learning we do in compulsory schooling is detrimental to our very selves" that immediately try to solve it with BUT WHAT IF BETTER SCHOOLS AND KEEP STRUCTURE AND STATUS QUO.

Have we considered all the reasons for why it is that this structure of learning is detrimental? Have we considered that the very fact that it's a fucking silo that prevents multi-generational learning and transmission is a problem (and I'm [not] sorry, but one adult per even twenty kids is not "multi-generational transmission")? Have we considered that by putting obstacles up (including financial obstacles) to adult learning that there is a reason why so many people view high school graduation (or even university graduations for those who can afford to attend) as "the final stop of learning"?

Because these questions routinely get overlooked. I keep seeing people respond to the critique of the way we learn in schools with... solving the problem by doing it slightly differently and without any real consideration for the social implications or the reasons for why or whatever else.

It makes me insane.

The biggest issue that #humanities can and should help to address is the lack of imagination.

For example, in a city designed for cars, people oftentimes have hard time imagining a good public transportation system or pedestrian infrastructure. They feel like it is inevitable to plan cities this way. The same applies to other areas of life.

The biggest promise of history and the study of other cultures is the ability to show that it is possible to live differently.
