Conor Titania Mc Bridepigworker@types.plOct 9, 2026, 10:52 PM@lindsey I have a form to fill in to join my new (I officially moved) local doctors' practice. And I get the binary version of this. I asked the receptionist how to play it, and she just said "tell us both". Which makes me cautiously optimistic.

(constitutional court ruled on recognition of intersex people some years back, so everyone's added a field)
Aliceprophet@functional.cafeOct 9, 2026, 11:16 PM@lindsey well those are the three officially recognized legal genders in germany so that's probably why
Oct 10, 2026, 12:28 AM@lindsey I think it's a false friend for divers which is just "other"?
typeswitchtypeswitch@gamedev.lgbtOct 10, 2026, 3:30 AM@megadec @lindsey this. i like the translation "sundry".
divers comes from the three gender system introduced in the Third Gender Act in Germany: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Gender_Act_(Germany)
chris martenschrisamaphone@hci.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:11 AM@lindsey is this the one everyone on fedi but me got invited to :(

@chrisamaphone probably not, I haven't seen anyone mention this one: "Abstractions for Composable Data-Intensive Cloud Systems" https://www.dagstuhl.de/en/seminars/seminar-calendar/seminar-details/27232

@lindsey "gender diverse" goes along with "gender nonconforming" on the list of "phrases i've never heard anyone self describe as, so can only assume a cis person made up because it made them more comfortable than asking someone knowledgeable"
Oct 10, 2026, 3:24 AM@chrisamaphone @lindsey This is a direct translation from German; for some reason divers caught on as the official marker for intersex people after a court case (and consequently for non-binary people)

@jac @chrisamaphone @lindsey lmao at the end of the wikipedia page. this is so funny
Oct 10, 2026, 3:47 AM@chrisamaphone @lindsey This is also a linguistic beef of mine, there's no such thing as a diverse individual. Diversity is a property of a group not of a person.
Philippa Cowderoyflippac@types.plOct 10, 2026, 7:30 AM@chrisamaphone @lindsey a long time ago I used GNC to make a point about being what I can now call a nonbinary trans woman
I was still talking to ignorant dipshits with doctorates in ignoring other people though
Prof Heino Falckehfalcke@mastodon.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:41 AM@lindsey Can you explain 🤔? At least in German these are the official terms.
