@swannodette the bsds are really a diffrent beast. They are really well designed imho. The linux landscape is the bazaar like it was said but the bsds are like a cathedral but without all the money. More like a builders dream.

@swannodette I don't know if I'm misunderstanding, but it says they actually raised 80k in 2025, with 50k being their usual target

Point stands but let's get numbers right for the sake of people with whatever neurospice makes you pedantic

@swannodette Also, in the post it states

<Riastradh> - We have net assets of a little over 400k USD as of today
<Riastradh> (we received a large donation in 2026).

Does anyone know what that donation is about and who it's from? A donation large enough to put the total over 300k above last year's is kind of suspicious these days with Anthropic throwing money at every OSS project they can find

@reiddragon it's possible but Anthropic likes to brag about these donations. Donating to a foundation that disallows LLM generated code and seems generally disinterested in mainstream trends seems odd?

@swannodette well, Anthropic was the most readily available example. There are other companies around I'd be wary of donations from, so it would still be nice to have ssome proper disclosure

@reiddragon I'm pretty sure donations can be kept private? I donated some time ago and was asked whether I wanted to make it public.

@swannodette it's fine for smaller donations of a few tens or hundreds of $currency, but when talking about a donation in the 6 digits there are potential issues with swaying the project one way or another, so usually those donations are made public for transparency

@reiddragon yeah I dunno! this NetBSD, the mailing lists conversations are about making sure VAX still works before a refactor, and whether to drop pkgsrc projects that devolve heavily into slop. I guess some one might really wants 68k Macs to work for another decade! ;)

@kaveman far as I can tell that number on the website is hardly ever kept up to date in any proper way.

@swannodette don't think so. Last December till mid Jan, it was close to 50k. The number moves when donations trickle in 🙂

@kaveman i just mean it doesn't appear to be up-to-date in an automatic way (I donated and I never saw it move w/ my donation). In any case the numbers are from the general meeting that I linked to, you can read it if you want :)

@swannodette I did read the AGM chat, and the 400k was mentioned as net asset worth, though it also mentions a large donation there. Usually, 50k is what they target annually, at least from what I've seen over the years. The bar is probably updated manually... and thanks for donating! (not affiliated with the project, just a happy consumer).

@kaveman ah yeah you’re right! That seems like a fairly large donation not part of the fundraiser or something which is at 12% as you said.
