A distressingly high % of the prose I see online is now AI-generated. It feels like I'm playing a coordination game in which a rising fraction of the world is defecting? And I guess it feels worse because there's this sense of insult—like, "did you think I wouldn't notice?" And then: "wait, do others not notice??" It's not subtle!

when people argue for consistency in computer environments as an absolute, i sometimes think of jane jacobs and her argument that urban environments are best when they're layers of old and new buildings mixed together. we have enough generations of software now that it'd be interesting to take that attitude to our computer environments. and there's a lot of old software that could still be useful if it were still readily accessible

New website runs on a $7/mo NetBSD 9.2 SDF.org VPS, just the builtin bozotic http server with haproxy handling TLS. The site and RSS feed are built from 200 lines of elisp thanks to ox-publish, ox-rss, ox-html. Updating the site is just rsync. All the current pages are <10K. No JS tracking stuff because I don't care who reads or how many people read it. Any discussion can happen on a source hut mailing list. Any one can download the discussion archives (if there ever are any).

Seventeen years ago! I bought this multi-million dollar hoard of Sun servers from a scrap yard for $300. After testing, fixing, and swapping parts to max out some of them, I traded a couple for an SGI Onyx for the museum, a few more for parts of what eventually became my personal 16-proc Origin-2000, and kept two as compute servers for my film making.

(A maxxed-out E4000 has 14 x 400 Mhz UltraSparc II's, and 14 gig of ram (In 128meg sticks! Ha ha ha. Warm.)).
