By the way, if you think I'm overreacting then you might not have used a very capable UV flashlight. If it had a clear lens, it probably output far too much visible light, which swamps the fluorescence. A GOOD LED UV light has a purpleish-black passband filter that only passes light near 365nm.

Normally, I'm very positive on devices that let us see the invisible. I think everyone should have access to an IR imager. If nothing else, people can see where their energy is leaking in their homes.

But I'm less certain anyone needs to see UV.
If you aren't a clean-freak before you've swung around a UV source, you might be after. Nobody needs to pile that anxiety on themselves.

@mdwyer I find the lights stuff fascinating and awesome but out of interest, what made this into a commentary about what people need?

I think there are technologies that increase human understanding, and I think that increasing human understanding is generally a Good Thing.

But there's some knowledge that can lead people to dark places (hah-hah.) and maybe people shouldn't go there unprepared.

@mdwyer thanks! I understand, I like how you put that.

I am itchin for IR and UV vision. I got all manner of questions for mr cosmos, see what all he's hiding right under my nose!

They're also good (with dye) to find oil or AC leaks, or finding where the damned cat has peed again. (The cat pee does not require dye.)

@FritzAdalis I think the filter is the key. Many of the "Purple LED" style ones work a bit better when you slap a filter on them.

Mind you, they're pretty much all UV-A. None of them are germicidal at that price point. And then you have the problem of buying a legit filter, too.

Anyway, this one seems to be the "TrixHub 365nm rechargeable" on Amazon that seems to have a million clones. This one seems pretty good, though.
