    i read an article about syntax highlighting that said "don't use bold or italics because they're redundant with color highlighting." but consider,

    a screenshot of THINK Pascal running on a black-and-white Macintosh desktop. the source code is presented in a variable-width font, with Pascal keywords highlighted in bold

    @joe

    Oh yes Pascal code too.
    Pascal code look 100x better than rust code for some reason. Maybe it is the let syntax which just makes it so much harder to read rust code.

    @pinskia would be cool if someone could give Ada a bit of a makeover with modern language niceties like sum types and pattern matching

    @joe @pinskia Ada has the same problem to us as all the other Pascal-ish languages: every neat idea they have is drowned in the kind of syntax that could only be truly loved by a european cis male. like, we get that this is because of its heritage as a pedagogic language by and for european cis men, but you can also imagine why we would simply not vibe with that, ya know?

    shot: unlocked ancient memory of being a week into introductory Turbo Pascal taught by a sexagenarian math teacher who drew the short straw and pinning the irritation on “why aren’t we doing C like grownups”

    chaser: Standard ML, despite the superficialities, does not irritate on contact in the same way

    @atax1a @joe @pinskia i mean, ada's style of keyword-heavy syntax has largely fallen out of favour, but it's really not radically different from many of its contemporaries (like ALGOL or BASIC)?

    what sets the syntax apart as 'for and by' european cis men?

    @atax1a ...lemme put this another way:
    i am nonbinary, and i do happen to like specific syntactical elements of both ada and pascal. the way you phrase this comes of like you are misgendering me, and that feels upsetting.
    i would *prefer* to at least understand where you are coming from with this, and what you dislike specifically.

    @atax1a the part that made me uncomfortable (aside from not being able to make sense of it) is how what you said suggests i were cis and a man, when i am neither, not the ethnicity (are you using 'european' and 'white' interchangably here?) part.

    ...i'll leave it at that.
