I wonder if this is a special condition in digital art conservation contexts, but I feel if there are really good programmers on a conservation project who absolutely enjoy programming, it can be detrimental to conservation goals. Rewriting software (and planning to do so in the future) is not conservation.

I find situations like that very difficult to navigate because these people genuinely want to put their talent to good use, enjoy art, and enjoy solving complicated problems, and are willing to do that at a fraction of industry salaries they could get elsewhere. But it is kind of the wrong problem.
