    @von_rostock I love it.
    The jagged pixel edge of the near-top corner of the box train appears to stay in place as the train moves, causing it to look like it is moving backwards relative to the train. Mesmerizing. Rather like looking at a real train going past.

    It makes me wonder how hard a hack would be needed to adjust the drawing of that edge such that it moves with the cars. It brings back memories of writing the line algorithm in assembly language in college.

    @poleguy interesting take. one approach would be to have sprites or some kind of atlas with orientation index and then just paste it on the screen. but... instead of sprites i have a generative drawing and render every single object with code

    @von_rostock I figured you were not using sprites. I was thinking along the lines of a hack where you modulate the size/shape of the train cars based on their speed such that the stair step effect at the edge moves at the same speed as the train.

    Probably no fun to try to figure out analytically, unless you are really into that type of puzzle.

    Anyway, real trains have lots of similar mesmerizing effects: strobe like effects, causing everything else to move backwards when you look away, etc.
