Initially, she coded in pencil and paper because she didn't have a computer. She began to learn Perl at age 12. By the year 2000, at the age of 19, Tang had already held positions in software companies, and worked in California's Silicon Valley as an entrepreneur.

Tang initiated and led the Pugs project, a project to implement the Perl 6 language. Tang also made contributions to internationalization and localization efforts for several free software projects.

Continuing with what we have informally called our "gayllery", today we move on to actual active KDE and @gnome contributors, starting with...

Meet Florian Müllner! (he/him)🏳️‍🌈 gay GNOME contributor.

Florian started contributing around 2009, as he said if his contribution was a person, it would be aproaching voting age right now. He contributes to gnome-shell, but also mutter, gnome-shell-extensions, polari. In addtion, as he has been around for a while, there's the occasional contribution to other bits and pieces around GNOME (GTK, control-center, gnome-settings-daemon, ...).

Florian finds GNOME a great community that welcomed him with open arms (once he dared to make the jump). He found some real friends over time.

There is also the mission. Providing a computing platform that is driven by vision and need rather than monetization opportunities and a strive for market domination is as important as it ever was.
Last but not least, when GNOME builds an OS "for everyone", that includes him. When GNOME gets better, so does his computing experience.

He likes all kinds of physical activity — walking, hiking, riding a bike. During the pandemic, he got hooked on variant sudoku, and it has been part of his daily routine ever since.

They are "the evil mastermind behind rounding the corners in our applications and adding window outlines. Currently most busy working on Union, though I do try to fix bugs as much as possible."

"Somehow (trying to) maintain desktop icons even I do not use desktop icons. Jack-of-all-trades, master of none. I also have my own todo software, KomoDo."

They contribute to KDE & FOSS because "I just like to write good software that people want to use."

"Being able to peek behind the curtain and see the machinery is big part why i like FLOSS in general, too. But in the end for me it's all about making robust software, moving slow and fixing things."

Akseli has been an active KDE contributor since 2021/22.

Other fun facts: "I love videogames, mostly FPS and RPGs. I used to be very good at QuakeLive back in the day (top 50 world-wide in FFA, top 10 in Finland).
My favorite games are TES3: Morrowind, anything Quake, EVE Online and X4 Foundations. But I play a lot of different stuff."

produce software infrastructure for "everyone". In his own words, "It is heartwarming to see this infra get used in countries like mine (Mexico), without having to ask permission or pay megacorps to use their products. And now that we are setting up the infrastructure like Flathub, this should open similar doors to independent app developers."

    Meet Sam Hewitt (they/them (preferred) he/him (acceptable)) 🏳️‍🌈, 💛🤍💜🖤

They have been contributing to the design of @gnome for many years, they have left their mark on the user interface, experience, icons, and such of many GNOME modules and websites. They joined in 2013 although they have lost track of when they started being more directly involved with GNOME, as they were floating around other projects. 😅

They find it important to contribute to GNOME and FLOSS. The fact these communities and projects are independent and driven by the people involved drew them to FLOSS, and GNOME. They believe that we, the passionate nerds who make up the community, make the platforms, apps, and software we use better because we want it to be better for ourselves and our peers.

They also think FLOSS communities like GNOME, KDE and many others are a vital, moral core in tech space (even more so today). They found them in their formative years and the passion and views of the people in the community they believe did them good and instilled an ethical framework that they have carried ever since, it's important to keep that going and lead by example.
