During the birdsite's heyday, it was a place where we engaged with other people who cared about sending #books to incarcerated #readers. We followed and retweeted #prison book programs in the US, Canada, UK, and France. We also chatted with many of our volunteers and supporters.
We love Mastodon, but are finding it a bit lonely. We would love to follow other groups that send books to people in #prisons. Does anyone have recommendations for whom we should follow?

I don't have any suggestions for you unfortunately.
And I've found the same thing. The abolition community on mastodon is small and not growing, as far as I can tell.

@DCBookstoPrisons up here in #Boston I created a Starter Pack to help local groups or accounts that are very boston specific get identified, perhaps as you find groups working in the prison / abolition / free books / distro space, you could manage a similar starter pack. @DCBookstoPrisons I'm not sure how the books are provided, but Uzbekistan recently passed legislation whereby some incarcerated individuals are eligible to reduce their sentences if they read selected books. https://www.euronews.com/culture/2025/09/13/reading-for-release-uzbekistan-to-free-prisoners-early-if-they-finish-chosen-books

@DCBookstoPrisons @courtcan FYI I think a lot of state and prisons no longer allow books to be sent. Arizona is one. Also many states not allowing original mail to be received. Only scanned prints.

@cobalt123 @courtcan Although a distressing number of prisons no longer allow books to be sent, many prisons do still allow books. We serve people in hundreds of prisons in 35 US states.
