Today, the behaviorist at the SPCA told me that they'd be locking down the whole facility tonight and doing everything that they can to keep all the animals calm. It's Guy Fawkes today.

Why we need to celebrate that particular holiday in South Africa I don't know. Just an excuse to get drunk and make noise I suppose.

@Zumbador I had no idea that you would celebrate Guy Fawkes night in South Africa. Drinking hasn't been part of the tradition here in the UK, at least not to my knowledge. It was all about the bonfire, fireworks, treacle toffee, parkin and baked potatoes.

@Dewines It's changed into a strange chaotic celebration. At one point it was necessary to close down some schools as there was a practice of kids throwing paint at one another and other and getting into fights.

@Zumbador Throwing paint is definitely nothing to do with Guy Fawkes night celebrations. I suppose some people just look for any excuse to make trouble.

@Zumbador ugh, I despise fireworks holidays. Our loveable megalodog Groot, who passed away this summer was terrified by them. 140lbs of freaked out dog climbing into your lap was something.

Where we are it was July 4th and New Year's eve. Though after moving to a state and county where personal fireworks are illegal and its only near by community displays that are blissfully short , it was much better. Areas where you can light off a personal armory's worth for hours on end are the worst!

@Vanalope It's a lot better these days since we also passed laws against personal fireworks. But a lot of people still use them. We also have Diwali at this time of year but less here in Cape Town.

@Zumbador Good morning on the 6th to you. Luckily we had no noisy business here in GlenAustin/Midrand where I'm staying for the week, and I doubt they would have had it at Klipkop Welbekend, where I usually live. Too many game animals on that farm/reserve area to allow for fireworks. And to my ears that's just a load of noise anyway. I know that some sighted finds it colourful, for me it's just unnecessary sudden noise. Hope you have a fantastic friday, that none of your rats give you a struggle today at least.

@Sozhami Yes it's been really quiet in my neighborhood too, thankfully.
The rats are sleepy and seem contented this morning. I gave them fresh basil leaves which is new to them, they like anything with strong smells and tastes! Hope you have a peaceful weekend further.
