How many of these so-called “red states” are actually voter suppression states?
Once you see it, it’s hard to stop seeing it.

@inthehands I'd go so far as to say all of them.
@inthehands not all of them, but yeah, basically a series of states that are all next to each other and we all know which ones they are
@julieofthespirits
You might say next to each other congregated in a federation. A con-federation. Just making up new words here
@inthehands 🤔 🤔 🤔
@inthehands
A *confederation* ahhh ha ha! Very good. 😊
Have also heard people say that when you see all the red on the big map of the USA… hardly anyone lives in the red bits. Most of the population is in the blue bits. 🤔
@Su_G @inthehands @julieofthespirits
And the red bits get extra representation due to the electoral college.
@violetmadder @Su_G @inthehands @julieofthespirits I've heard that's a deliberate choice. Sort of an offer the union made to the confederates after the war in order to pacify them. It was meant to secure the power and influence as they were mostly a gang of big landowners. It was meant to give them influence disproportionate to their numbers. I've read an estimate of 5% of the vote that you'd have to subtract from conservative numbers if you'd switch to direct voting.
@Tamtam @violetmadder @Su_G @inthehands @julieofthespirits ... three-fifths of all other persons ...
@Tamtam @Su_G @inthehands @julieofthespirits
Definitely a deliberate choice.
There are a lot of antidemocratic mechanisms in this supposed democracy.
@inthehands (also, the people saying "all of them" - you have clearly never been to indiana. people are genuinely into that shit there)
I believe the same holds for the Dakotas, UT, WY. But also…places like Indiana could shift in surprising ways if cities grow.
@inthehands all these states where it doesn't seem to be because of electoral fraud, we could almost say that they are above a line
@inthehands also the dakotas would change if there was land back
Now that is something I’d sure like to see.
@inthehands
I think most, if not all of them!
@inthehands
it more or less follows the ex-slave states... really makes you think 🤔
@noiseician
Pure coincidence I’m sure
@inthehands all of them, by design, especially in the South.
@inthehands I think most all red states are actually voter suppression states when it comes right down to it. In my state, for example, you're required to have an actual street address, and if you don't you cannot vote. Many indigenous folks who reside on tribal land do not have street addresses, not because they're homeless, but because many homes are not assigned one. I see this as deliberate voter suppression, created by law.
@inthehands once you've seen a u.s. voting district map, you'll never stop wanting to beat Republicans &c., with apologies to Mr. Bourdain (although I suspect he'd be sympathetic)
Remember that before the Roberts Court eviscerated the Voting Rights Act this kind of chicanery was illegal.
High priority (among many) to restore the VRA and strip SCOTUS jurisdiction on its constitutionality, or better just fix SCOTUS.
@inthehands people are DEEPLY committed to the rhetoric about how stupid the rednecks are
but yeah, having known a lot of rednecks I've got some questions about that
@inthehands I just volunteered to make calls to help Mississipeans cure their provisional ballots.
@inthehands
My guess is all of them.
@inthehands Donald Trump said something on Fox News yesterday, that made me wonder; ”It’s not so much about the candidates, but the people who count the votes.” 🤔🤔🤔
@inthehands Republicans have said they haven't won a federal election in the last 30 years without cheating. They know.

I am really interested in seeing what the ones that flipped blue will do about the voter suppression and how that will change things going forward.
