not enough people are saying Andy Yen did a Ratner and they should be
> After the speech, the value of the Ratner Group plummeted by around £500 million,
A number of people have pointed this out in my timeline over the last months but I wanted to reiterate:
the defence - 'they were just a few bad apples', misses the actual point of the aphorism:
a few bad apples in a barrel, actually corrupts the entire barrel, unless removed (very)( quickly.
users of the phrase may defend that use by saying they acted quickly to avoid the corruption; but as they never really do, the original use - the corrupting effect *of* the bad apples, stands!
It is telling that the Proton engineering manifesto states::
"Why has productivity not increased dramatically if everyone is using LLMs all the time already?"
Followed by a number of theories as to what needs to change to improve productivity with LLM use. The most obvious answer is ignored - that LLMs are not dramatically helping productivity and that their direct and indirect costs should be more keenly considered against any gains.
If you live in the US and you're worried that there's no point in voting, you got to ask yourself why they're trying so hard to stop people from doing it.
And then go out and vote!
"Sam Altman sympathizes with mathematicians, but..."
-sigh- Do I have to tap the sign again?
STOP ANTHROPOMORPHIZING AI EXECUTIVES.
For fuck's sake, they just keep overselling these things. Do they *really* expect us to believe, 4 years into this tsunami of horseshit, that an AI executive can "sympathize" with human concerns now?
Sam Altman is as capable of sympathy as your toaster is.
These fucking assholes drive up the cost of so many basic things that are central to people's lives, and then claim that, because of the shortage and expense THEY CREATED, we should just let the oligarchs have it all and sharecrop from them in perpetuity.
Fuck these people. Every one of them.
The most depressing thing about the current bubble is that so many of the flagship ‘look how amazing AI is!’ things are things where LLMs are a pretty poor fit and other techniques work much better, but the baseline for comparison uses well under 10% of the compute, often under 1%. If you threw 10% of the memory and processor capacity at the non-LLM approach, it would work much better than the LLM approach. Yet it’s easy for OpenAI or Anthropic to burn $10M on a tech demo and incredibly hard to get anyone to spend $1M on a good solution to the same problem.
As long as money is flowing to these companies, they’re starving interesting research of resources because there’s no incentive to build efficient systems when a company is willing to set fire to investors’ money to run the horribly inefficient version for you.
My 12yo wanted to be a borb (rotund orb-shaped bird) - specifically a black-capped chickadee. We worked on his costume all month. I had to take him to school Friday cause he couldn’t carry his backpack. He won the costume contest at school for a second year running and was a hit trick-or-treating!
apples aren't special. you can bob for whatever the hell you want. go bobbing for fish I dunno. water is literally full of those things.
31st of Owltober!
Horst the Eagle-Owl was found soaked in oil and flightless. After weeks of many grumpy baths from Heike Kneseback, he was once more fit for the wild. Pathetic
When the Allies began liberating Europe in 1944, they did something really clever: they quietly set up supposedly pro-Nazi radio stations but every so often inserted propaganda that harmed the Nazi war effort. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldatensender_Calais & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_1212)
It meant ordinary Germans actively listened to the stations, dropped their psychological guard and then believed various deliberate lies designed to confuse and demoralise them.
It seems Nazis of today use this tactic in reverse, pretending to be pro-democracy to draw in a mainstream audience, but inserting anti-democratic propaganda at crucial moments.
The other tactic employed by the New York Times is to give scant coverage to issues they want to suppress. For instance at the same time they are flogging the Alaska ballot story, they are studiously ignoring the new revelations concerning Trump rape, Epstein money, and Kushner payoffs.
The net effect is to normalize extreme issues to protect allied perpetrators and incite action against those they target.

The New York Times is a precision information warfare weapon. This is not hyperbole. They target specific stories and blow them out of proportion to assert maximum influence at critical moments.
This is only possible because of trust. Their ammunition is public trust. They build trust over time and then fire it in targeted attacks like the current Alaska ballot campaign.
Whenever you see something creditable from the NYT recognize they are simply rearming their trust stockpile.

Erm? The U.S. #Army recently conducted its first large-scale mass battlefield grave training exercise since the Korean War as part of Operation Dragon Covenant at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This drill, involving the 3rd Corps Sustainment Command and the 20th Engineer Brigade, tested the ability to dig and fill temporary interment trenches using D6 bulldozers while preserving remains for future identification and repatriation.
The Army estimates that an engineer company with eight bulldozers and four excavators could bury up to 2,400 bodies in 24 hours.
I find this a tad disconcerting.
