    when we sign up on an instance because it was one of the options presented to us that is accepting new accounts, there is no way for us to know anything else about these instances. it’s a “trust me bro” situation and i don’t think cornering users in a “trust me bro” situation is an appropriate way to change the way we use the internet.

    on two separate occasions, i signed up on an instance that went down a short time later and there is no way to find out wtf happened and why. it’s discouraging. we can’t even get to the point of learning to migrate to another instance when everything just disappears with no warning.

    i mean, if the point of the fediverse is that one can make one account and still interact with others signed up everywhere else - this is not how we get that.

    right now, people feel the need to sign up everywhere they can because you just never know if you’ll wake up one day and find out your entire fedi presence was vaporized, with no means of finding out why or whether it’s permanent. do we remain patient and if so, how long?

    there is literally no easy way to find this out. that’s not ok.

    @aptronym

    it's tough to figure when it's time to jump ship to another instance. I have zero tolerance for software bullshit so my sign is if the instance i'm on malfunctions more than twice in a month.

    @coolcalmcollected i am not at all tech savvy. i wouldn’t recognize most malfunctions. i tend to only notice when i go to sign in and get “bad gateway” over and over again for months.

    most recently, i signed up on a pixelfed instance shortly before this php thingie dropped - so i figured maybe patience is necessary. but now i’ve found out that most of the rest of pixelfed has been back up, yet not the instance i signed up on, and there is no way to find out what’s going on. is it coming back? should i just start over on another “trust me bro” instance? and then if this instance comes back, now i have two pixelfed accounts.

    what i am wondering is WHY is this even a problem? we’ve got so many helpful sources of information on fediverse but no way to find out any useful information about the instances we sign up on. the people who run these instances have tech skills and that is it - yet we are expected to just trust them with our data, no questions asked.

    @aptronym the most I can find out is if the instance is accepting new accounts. I'm sure there's a way to rate them but like you I do not have skills for that

    @otte_homan i’m saying like, why isn’t there an easy way to find out what is going on? just as a courtesy, to keep us courteous lol
