change of venue is not magical. we have picked up bad habits, we have learned toxic attitudes and assumptions, and when we fail to challenge those bad habits and toxic attitudes/assumptions, we are wasting this opportunity to build something better - we waste the time and effort of the techies who develop these spaces.

the technical features cannot fix our attitudes. we have to do it, each of us and all of us. computers can’t reflect. we can but we’re not. this is not good.

i mean, if the point of the fediverse is that one can make one account and still interact with others signed up everywhere else - this is not how we get that.

right now, people feel the need to sign up everywhere they can because you just never know if you’ll wake up one day and find out your entire fedi presence was vaporized, with no means of finding out why or whether it’s permanent. do we remain patient and if so, how long?

there is literally no easy way to find this out. that’s not ok.

when we sign up on an instance because it was one of the options presented to us that is accepting new accounts, there is no way for us to know anything else about these instances. it’s a “trust me bro” situation and i don’t think cornering users in a “trust me bro” situation is an appropriate way to change the way we use the internet.

on two separate occasions, i signed up on an instance that went down a short time later and there is no way to find out wtf happened and why. it’s discouraging. we can’t even get to the point of learning to migrate to another instance when everything just disappears with no warning.

genuine community is suicide prevention and you’ll see a lot of people say that they agree, but what you will never see are these same people putting this into real world practice.

to them, solidarity is merely a declaration. community is a word used to refer to people with something in common. politics is a list of positions they agree with or disagree with.

that is the totality of their commitment to a better society. we can all do better but it’s not going to happen without a conscious and intentional effort. it’s uncomfortable, sometimes scary, but i’d rather die knowing that i wasn’t alone, that people were fighting alongside me, than die completely alone and aware that nobody cares and nobody ever did.

it’s terrifying to understand that i’ve been doing this for years and there has been zero progress made - not for lack of effort on my part but everyone else’s lack of interest.

the internet allows us to delude ourselves about who we really are. it allows us to believe that we are making meaningful connections with other humans when that’s just not the case at all. it’s not because of the internet, it’s because of the way we use the internet.

i’ve been trying for years to help people understand the concept of interdependence, the concepts of mutual aid and solidarity IN PRACTICE - and i am forever faced with people who claim to already know all of this and yet they obviously don’t bc nothing changes except for me being silenced for the crime of “telling y’all something you already know”

this has been building up for years. it’s not “all happening at once” - it’s been happening over time and there’s nothing i can do by myself to change it, so the problems build up, they get worse and more frequent because my problems cannot be solved on an individual basis - it requires collective action and we can’t have that because everybody simultaneously already knows everything and doesn’t know what to do because they refuse to listen and refuse to apply any of their knowledge to real world circumstances.

if you don’t know what to do, that is not evidence that there’s nothing you can do. you can do something but it does require some degree of effort on y’all’s part to not only listen, but to reclaim your political imagination so you can help figure out solutions.

as it stands right now, all i see are people who expect those of us who are dying to also have a comprehensive solution and list of duties to hand out to each of you.

it gets to a point where this ingrained indifference is no longer unintentional. when someone is begging for their life and you see no one else stepping up, inaction is complicity.

I was robbed last Friday (over a week ago) in the middle of the night by neighbors who brought the stupidest cops on earth, and i can’t even make a police report BECAUSE THE COPS WERE HERE WHEN IT HAPPENED

so i obviously need a lawyer just to make a report but guess what? there aren’t any who will do this. they don’t return calls, even if they offer “free consultations” you can’t very well get that free consultation if they don’t return your calls

i also asked other neighbors to please just act as witnesses BEFORE shit escalated - but they said no and that i need to believe them when they say “the police here are very kind” - so obviously that’s not gonna happen now.

i literally have NO ONE.

you people seem to believe that there will always be some knight attorney in shining business attire who will ride in and save the day with media attention and pro bono services - no, that almost NEVER happens.

what’s happening to me happens every day under cover of apathy and indifference. people die like this all the time and it’s not until afterwards that anyone decides to say anything, “what a tragedy what a shame” - the REAL TRAGEDY IS THAT NO ONE HAS THE GUTS TO STAND UP FOR US WHEN IT ACTUALLY FUCKING MATTERS - speaking up after we’re already dead is convenient and safe the way cowardice is convenient and safe.

biskit moved in with us in mid-April of this year. she is a very sweet and affectionate kitty with clearly “stated” boundaries that are best understood in the context of bodily autonomy.

she wants to be close without surrendering her control of her spot. and so this short but very cute little kitten tower has worked out perfectly for her.
