    @mattsheffield
A colleague of mine organizes science workshops for gifted high school students. A few years ago, whenever he asked if they wanted to study abroad, most of them would say the US.

Now none of them do. He emphasized not a single one.

So as a European, I can confirm.

@mattsheffield That horse has fled the burning barn, I think. There are some people within a couple of years of retirement who are hanging on.

@mattsheffield Factor in cascading ecosystems collapse worldwide; and the equation starts to look like a 1 in 100 mass extinction event.

    Even Milankovitch would be dumbfounded.

Right...censorships, budget cuts and anti-intellectualism, not violent thugs in the street and concentration camps.

@mattsheffield Not if we keep pushing things like he did.

Because those scientists went over to his enemies and helped build shit. Shit like the atomic bomb.

So we could learn in a few years that it was a REALLY bad idea to drive all the scientists away as we recover from whatever new horror is wrought upon us by whoever Trump decided to "wipe off the face of the Earth," this week.

@awaterma @mattsheffield Remember, Trump's previous rulership was for four years in addition to what he has already started now. Of course if we don't turn both Congress and the Senate in this upcoming election (and his health doesn't fail before the end of the official term) he intends to remain in power over America until whenever his health should fail and will probably succeed in doing so, but yeah, it has been longer than two years and his first time of rule had lasting reach...

@mattsheffield And we're not supposed to recognize that he's actively destroying the USA because he says otherwise. I am honestly at a loss how so many people haven't really noticed we're failing in every meaningful way.

    Quality of life is falling.
    Incomes are falling.
Services are being reduced or outright shut down.
The Postal System is being leveraged to destroy democracy.
The people are being actively incited to turn on each other by the POTUS and his party.

@gooba42 @mattsheffield Seriously, WTF is wrong with the human brain in general that just because the right keeps saying they're doing good when they do bad things the grand majority seem to just... accept it... Just because they say it over and over people just... accept it...

And even before the mass media started openly working for the far right, all it took was for them to just repeat everything verbatim. The right knew they could make claims and they'd be repeated without fact checks.

@gooba42 @mattsheffield Because the media has been largely captured by the rightwing and lies to the people. If they even acknowledge these issues, they use them to drive outrage for the culture war and racial and sexist agendas.

True, and German was a dominant language for science publications, so Hitler also limited the global reach of the German language.

@mattsheffield And Republicans. Republicans are also responsible. Trump would be a stupid ugly old orange man with no power if it were not for the Republicans. They have participated in the destruction of America's present and future.

@mattsheffield Same thing happened to Russia under Putin. When you let the oligarchs steal the money out of your entire society, the smart people leave.
