In September, we gathered 150 randomly selected people from across Europe in Brussels to discuss how we can make our democracies stronger.

This weekend, they’re gathering once again to continue the discussion.

Following their final session in December, they will put forward some concrete proposals that will directly feed into our policies.

And you can be part of it too!

@EUCommission There's no one simple answer - but keeping billionaire's and big businesses' capital out of politics must be one part of it, and proper regulation of media (including social media platform operators) another.

@EUCommission It would be great if some of these 150 citizens raised a fundamental question: why are our democratically elected institutions so dependent on communication platforms controlled by unelected tech billionaires?

Who controls the infrastructure of political communication also holds considerable power over our democracies.

    Proposal:
Establishment of randomly selected citizens’ assemblies in all European countries to address the question of how individual countries can democratically reform their constitutions. These assemblies should be advised by independent experts, and citizens must be given the opportunity to submit proposals.
Then the same should be done for the EU.

Political parties divide society, and elections exclude more than 99% of citizens from political participation and decision-making.

It’s no wonder, then, that there is mistrust, dissatisfaction, and division in society and politics.

It will not be enough to make a few minor improvements here and there, and it is not constructive to consult citizens merely to give the appearance of legitimacy and then cherry-pick the results.

The cornerstone of a democracy remains the political equality of its citizens. As long as this is not understood and respected, we are unlikely to see any social progress; on the contrary, we must expect an increase in crises.

@EUCommission One way to make democracies stronger is to NOT install mass surveillance systems that are modeled after totalitarian systems like China or Russia. Things like chat control and age verification have no place in a strong democracy.

And start fighting the far right fascists instead of working with them.

A much-needed debate. Yet the sphere where opinions are formed today — the cognitive one — remains the most exposed to synthetic manipulation, and no European constitution safeguards it yet. Constitutionalizing its protection as a fourth power could enrich this panel's work. Open analysis in EN/ES:

Don't talk about making democracies stronger while you destroy online anonymity in the name of children.

Why the fuck is an undemocratically-appointed entity proposing legislation?

    That's what parliament is for.

@EUCommission I applaud the way that the EU promotes democratic values and institutions, and I truly believe that many of the guardrails set by the union make Europe stronger — but I feel that the union still has a problem with a democratic deficit.

Based on my experiences as a social studies teacher in upper secondary school, the EU still appears as an impenetrable bureucratic monolith to many (if not most) students. The obfuscation around some of the proposed legislation — such as Chat Control — certainly doesn’t help.

With that in mind, we still have a long way ahead of us in mobilising young voters in the elections to the European Parliament.

@EUCommission The Commission is selected in an obscure process of political lobbying and it decisions are mostly dictated by economic lobbies. It manipulates the voting of the parliament when the most democratic process of the EU takes place (#chatcontrol). This initiative is a mockery of citizen assembly. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

@EUCommission learn how to live democracy as leader and more important as participant living in Europe. One important info is: you can get and reach everything by yourself in a democracy. From a new soccerfield in your neighbourhood to regulating street usage to changing taxlaws. Your investment: time. As bonus you are free to live where and how you see fit.

@EUCommission start by not creating a surveillance and censorship infrastructure through Chat Control and the EU Kids Act, and also stop all attempts at undermining encryption such as through the ProtectEU resolution!
