so anyways... on Saturday I did some photography at the local protest to repeal a bill that infringes on trans kids rights in my province. for context, I started the legal challenge and resistance against it alongside a small team of people.

I was pointedly told by one of the speakers
on microphone not to take photos of people and not to post my photos. I was additionally approached by someone designated by the MC's as reps of the committee not to post my photos.

So colour me surprised when about an hour ago the coalition posts my photos without asking me
in an official media capacity. On said photos is my full first and last name via a photo credit, and tagged on the official coalition page is my personal instagram.

How is this just expected to be okay? Look, if I was
asked and honoured and respected, I would've given higher quality renders without the photography credit tag burnt into the photo. I would've worked out a relationship of mutual respect wherein all I ask is that, if asked for the source, the coalition directs people my way privately.

Just before this, I spent a while chatting with a colleague who is capped at a starvation wage and a maximum of $100 in gifts/month. She also is chairing a trans support organization that pays multiple people full salaries. She is being forced to do the work of the executive director and a number of staff positions. The previous interim executive director stepped down recently. He is able to keep his other job in the org, making a living wage. But my colleague is unable to ask for even a coffee in thanks for ensuring the staff positions stay.

How. Is. This. Acceptable? How can we treat this like the norm? I just dont fucking understand! what the fuck is this pull the ladder up behind me bullshit?

and the frustrating thing is: these two stories are just a few that ive heard in recent history. and its always trans people being extracted from.

and im not talking about ensuring people are paid thousands of dollars. I just mean like... a fucking thank you. how can we expect such labour from people, such risk, and not even fucking ask? not even fucking say thank you?

I bought my colleague a coffee today because she needed the community care. I did so from the overdraft in my account, because I am lucky enough to have it. Why the fuck is she out here working with funding and regulatory bodies without the capacity to so much as get herself a little kindness on a hard day?

what the fuck is wrong with our society that we just expect this? that we just treat this like fucking normal? it turns out, nine times out of ten, if you just ask people kindly and treat hem with respect, people will gladly jump on board and help the ship stay afloat.

look I come from a local community wherein all the traditional "pillars" of the community are dying. There isnt a single long-standing queer organization that is operating in a way that people feel good about. Whether it be pride boards that pay winners of the awards gala but make losers pay for their ticket, or the queer students organization that has institutionalized racism and labour extraction. The traditional community in my area is dying.

And new things are popping up around them of course. But ultimately, we are talking about
core infrastructure to the survival of our community and every single one of them is being run by skeezy sketchy white people and people who are so stuck in their need to get theirs that they cannot see past their own nose.

ive been directly involved in the leadership and service to the queer community of my local area for over 15 years. I have built and burnt relationships. I have put my mind, body, and soul on the line for trans kids. And at no point have I ever asked for anything more than a roof over my head, enough to afford my medications, and to eat a nutritious diet.

I just dont understand how people can pull the ladder up behind them like this. At every turn, every time that I have reached out to another person in community with respect and worked to build something its worked out. It's just so easy!

    "hey, wanna do a thing?"
"maybe, but I have these reservations"
"oh for sure! why dont we talk about those and discover what we can do!"

we live in a world wherein we have built platforms and industries around us. how are we using those platforms to tear each other down?

im genuinely just so mad. I need to put my energy into something good and productive, but my body is too sore and downtrodden from the shoot/protest this weekend to go and do some art.

    ugh.

and im not even mad about my photos being used

im just mad at how normalized it is to do this kind of shit, to just not pay people or not even ask how they feel about it.

@technocrow this shit is so vile and dehumanizing, and across every queer nonprofit I've worked with in any capacity I too have seen the brunt of it falling on trans people (and black and brown queer people of all identities). it's a disgusting way to take advantage of the fact people are trying to help their community!
