I'm trying these vibe coded apps that claim to be a FOSS replacement for Photoshop and other Adobe products.
SoundCraft: (ProTools clone) Not usable. Cannot change the buffer or set the inputs properly. Huge latency when playing guitar and using the built in monitoring. Will wait a week or two to try again.
PhotoCraft: So far pretty impressive. The one tool that does not behave as intended is the mixer bursh tool to do digital painting with nice blends. Need to work on a project in it to find more issues.
Will slop open-source kill proprietary software or is it just the beginning of a wave of trash, projects that are fun for 2 weeks and then will never be finished, maintained, updated...

Tried the Photocraft, Vectorcraft, and Lightcraft. They're not 100% replacement level yet, which is fine. But it does 90% of the things I use the Adobe equivalents for.

I'm not happy about it being done with AI, but at this point I have so much animosity towards Adobe that I'm for it.

@retrimental My exact feeling as well.
I've been struggling a bit to use creative apps on Linux. I'm mostly switching between Krita and Affinity.
The community has managed to bring affinity to a very usable state on Linux, but it is not FOSS and I can see it coming, with their freemium approach, that they will eventually charge a subscription and will enshittify.

It is pretty evident that these AI slop clones will most likely fizzle out. Generating a code base that despite being open source is hard to read, hard to review will, IMHO, prevent them from achieve feature parity.
But weĺl see, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Canva will freak out and will start working on a Linux version for their stuff as well.

My exact thoughts. I like Affinity, sure, but I'm at the point where I simply do not trust it if it's not open source.

Of course FOSS isn't immune to enshittification but proprietary software is very prone to it.

Even if there's some legal witchcraft that Adobe does, FOSS can at least be forked. There's *some* level of longevity for FOSS that reassures me enough to trust it. And damn, at least someone can audit the code so we know the devs aren't collecting and selling data to bigcorp

@retrimental I think a huge misunderstanding is that - although the #ArtCraft programs are partly vibe coded - an experienced developer did it. someone without any prior knowledge to coding *can* vibecode with AI, but the results will never be as good as from an experienced developer: there are so many aspects of clean code, security issues etc. a noob would never think of.
So, AI is not automatically there to replace all programmers. I think it is a new tool, programmers can use to develeop much faster and even better.

    Oh yeah you're right.

Well that's a relief in a way. I'm not very comfortable with AI assistance but at least it would be nice if someone who knows their stuff reviews it before it releases.

And honestly I think clanker-assisted kernel updates are much scarier than apps for creators.
