JUST IN: Meta is using AI data centers to claim research tax credits, according to the NYT. Its total research credits reached almost $4,000,000,000 in 2025 alone.
It also counted Mark Zuckerberg’s $4.1 billion compensation as research spending to claim a $355 million tax break.
Apparently when you’re worth $2 trillion, a data center is a science experiment and your CEO’s $4 billion payday is research.
@FluentInFinance This isn't surprising. The R&D tax credit is engineered to rope in a lot of standard operating procedures.
Personally, I would eliminate the credit across the board and count on people who need real research to do it.

We had to split time out on our timesheets for work on existing releases vs. new releases so we could claim it and we stopped doing that a year or so ago.

Oct 3, 2026, 8:17 PM@FluentInFinance I spent a good chunk of my career trying to convince a hundred billion dollar company to invest in, and take research tax breaks for, work to make it easier to sign up for a cost-effective health plan based on prior claims activity, and they never even tried. It is unsurprising but galling news that Meta will take federal money (essentially. don't complain about the details.) to make life WORSE for almost all people.
