Found out in the fediverse some time ago.

"Please don't think that you can stop a Nazi by pointing out hypocrisy or by pointing out that they are lying.

They know. It is a feature, not a bug.

When a fascist lies to you, they are displaying power. "I know I am lying. You know I am lying. What the fuck are you going to do about it."

When a fascist lies to other fascists, they are displaying loyalty. "I know I am lying. You know I am lying. We do this because it is how we show allegiance to the cause."

In this way, fascism is inherently an empty ideology. It stands for nothing. It believes in nothing. It can therefore lie about everything.

    Except one thing: power.

Fascism MUST lie. It MUST deceive. It MUST play to baser beliefs like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia, because it has literally nothing of value to offer.

They know this. We know this. That is why they lie."

@sintrenton@todon.nl And that is why you either punch them or, if you don’t want to break the law that hard (I usually don’t) insult them. And why you aim below the belt when you do. Calling them dumb won’t do much, calling them otherwise problematic slurs (e.g. fatphobic stuff) while connecting it to them being the ones who chose that metric, is going to accomplish more, because that too shows strength and attacks attacks their’s.

They are the enemy, don’t hold back. You can even be hypocritical about it, because you don’t subscribe to their ideology. So don’t hesistate insulting them for their failure of being their 1.9 m, blond, slender, blue-eyed, smart, able-bodied Arian ideal if you fail that twice as hard in a strict superset of the categories: You don’t subscribe to these things, so they are the only one who cares and by owning it you take the power away from them while attacking what are most like their biggest insecurities.

Remember: If they go low, dig a tunnel!

@sintrenton Full agreement. This is what Trump and his minions have done since before 2016. There is a reason, however, to point out hypocrisy and lies in many situations: observers. Other people might not recognize what's going on, but reasonable observers will understand. Those observers might come along years from now, online, which is why I think it is helpful to push back and provide reality-based, and kindness-based, and justice-based narratives in response to fascist assholery online. We won't convince the fascists, ever. We might, however, ensure that theirs is not the only voice in the online record.

@sintrenton Yes, we know. The Socials are not 'a one-to-one conversation'. When you say things to Nazis, people who might be attracted to them see a point of view from outside their bubble.
