@jake4480 ha! I just brought back home a box full of my old CDs and tapes that was stored in my parents basement.

@derthomas hell yeah!! I only have SOME of my childhood ones.. I lost a whole large book of them when a friend kept some many years ago... but I do still have a lot of important ones, and newer ones I've bought haha

@jake4480 @derthomas there's something special about putting on a vinyl record, sitting down and giving it your full attention in a way that you just don't get with an MP3 player or music streaming service.

@jake4480 there is something really nice about sitting down and looking through the collection of actual *things* to decide what to watch, play, or listen to.

My kids (8 and 10) have a growing CD collection and they listen to music every day.

I've been expanding my collection of movies, and I have been enjoying the experience of selecting DVDs and Blu-rays to watch.

It is much more intentional than purely digital where you easily end up consuming without even thinking about it.

@AldinTheMage that is so true. And so cool you're passing that idea on to your kids. My kid is 19 now and recently got into vinyl records too, which I found so great. I bought him a player, he bought me a record! Wild.

@wendigo thanks! That was a long time coming.. Been working on it for weeks. Months? Well, actively for weeks. Wanted to make sure it had the right flow, and digging through all the links for the best ones, it was interesting to research and find out all that history, the decades they all came out. Wild

@jake4480 the idea #MyBloodyValentine’s “Loveless” isn’t on #AppleMusic is ridiculous, just to name one. Add shit like you can only get the remixed Beatles — there’s others — albums makes it a nonstarter. There’s always a way, some releases are only on streaming. I download them and use #AudioHijack to record them. Audio Hijack is a Mac app that allows you to record any audio from any app.

@gavin57 thank you dude! And UGH I saw that. Should've linked to it. Brutal. Just the worst nonsense. Well, maybe I saw it in an image.. basically about how if buying isn't owning, piracy isn't theft. It's rough out there.

@jake4480 Nice post! We've been doing the physical media backed up to Jellyfin thing for a while and I love it. My big splurge last year was a region-free 4k player although mostly we use it for video store rentals.

@cherizilla heck yeah!! And thank you for reading! That Jellyfin seems amazing, I really gotta do it. I have so many players now, it's weird, along with Blu-ray, I even recently bought a VHS player, been a while, but I find VHS sometimes - a band I dig even put out a VHS version of their new album recently, with videos. Wild.

    @jake4480

Great post, and with you all the way. I regularly pick up books, CDs and DVDs/BluRays from local op shops (thrift stores). some are keepers, but I donate a lot back if I don't want to reread/watch. (The CDs get ripped either way.)

I still stream, but now only maintain one sub at a time, where it used to be five, and rotate them when I get bored/am done. At this point when I sign up I cancel again a few days later, knowing I've got roughly a month to catch up on whatever's there.

@imalcolm haha heck yeah dude, thanks for reading! Ripping CDs and such is the best. I admittedly have several streaming services, but for different reasons haha.. kinda hate paying Disney monthly but Hulu has Bob's Burgers, yknow. And like, Modern Family that we're going through. But for music, books, and the WEIRD movies and TV shows that would never even be on streaming.. super important. I have a big drive with all kinds of that on there- from TV to movies to e-books, too. It really helps. Thrift stores are the BEST for finding that stuff, right? Just every time I go, I'm impressed with what I find. And I never expect to find anything! 😂

@jake4480 Much as I love and recommend physical media, CDs and DVDs have kinda been ruined for me by DRM. For CDs, it was the Sony rootkit fiasco: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

With DVDs, it was the time my family tried to watch Avengers. None of the old DVD players we had could play the disc reliably, and I strongly suspect it had to do with the newer copy protection on the disc. Which didn’t stop me from ripping the movie to my laptop so we could watch it that way. Go figure.

But vinyl, cassettes, and VHS? Yeah, I’d collect those. Hell I’d even grab laserdiscs if I could find a player.

@johnny wow I had NOT heard of this! Heard of DRM being crappy with ebooks and music but wow. Even movies. Ridiculous I love vinyl and CDs so much. Even did recently buy a VHS player! Hahaha

@johnny oh wow I didn't know they had these! And yeah, it was at a thrift shop I lucked out. It was an out of town one, too. The in town ones never have the players either here, it seems. Just the tapes 😂

@JohnnyRewind hahaa heck yeah!! Yeah, I do love VHS. Recently grabbed a player - not so easy to find anymore! I run across the tapes a lot though.
