For the record I think that with about 24 hours of Cybersecurity Awareness Month left, at this point I'm sufficiently aware of cybersecurity.

I don't think any additional cybersecurity awareness is necessary. This is plenty, you know? More than plenty. Enough, I would say. I get it. Awareness confirmed. Ample awareness. We're good.

Less of a fess and more good advice: If I'm ill over the weekend I will take a sick day the following week to make sure I still get good time off. Being sick at the weekends is stealing your own time, get paid to be sick.

Hi Fediverse Fam! I'm sitting here hoping that the art lovers here can help me out.

I'm a digital artist/photographer, and with the economy as it is, sales have been unusually slow this year. Bad timing as I also had three surgeries this year, which meant a lot of down time and unexpected expenses that wiped me out.

Normally, things pick up by now, but this year they just haven't. I'm getting pretty frantic and hoping this post might connect me with people looking for art for their spaces.

As you can probably tell from the small sample of my art I've shared, I rarely stick to one subject for very long. I like some variety, and I tend to follow whatever has caught my interest at the moment.

If anything you've seen catches your eye, or you'd like to see more, my Etsy is here: https://marktisdaleart.etsy.com

And if buying art isn't in the cards right now, helping more people discover my work would mean a lot.

- Care work ought to pay what tech work pays.
- Care work ought to pay its workers that, not its managers that.
- Care work shouldn't see managers driving around in brand new luxury cars while the staff scrape by month to month.

And if you think that's crazy; consider this:

- Care work is the *only* work that can't be outsourced to AI and automation.
- Care work is *fucking hard*.
- Every one of us will need it eventually.

And, frankly, care work matters far more than tech work.

The project has received its shipment of ATmega1284s.

Should flashing a bootloader to them be successful, the chips will then have BASIC flashed to them, and they will each be tested for their serial I/O.

The next step in this process will be to add some sort of display to the device.

The project will first be exploring small LCD and TFT displays.

Do you have any spare Arduino compatible TFT or LCD screens you can contribute to the project?

We are happy to pay the postage to here in Western Australia.

Please boost.

Pulled trig on the new battery bc being battery-less would be really inconvenient with some things I have coming up. Hopefully it is just as simple as swapping it out to fix the charging problem

I do feel pretty aware of cybersecurity today.

Shoutout to all my friends and former co-workers as they deal with the upcoming PHPocalypse.

While I no longer get paid to do stuff with PHP it is still a great tool for building web sites and would use it if asked (I am currently using TypeScript and Python and Go)

Software is hard. Building secure software is even harder. Your favourite programming language also has security vulnerabilities you don’t know about. Don’t be smug and think “mine is the superior language”.

My lenovo t14 gen 5 isnt charging. My best guess is that the battery has simply failed, but want to be sure before I buy a $100 replacement. Anybody have any troubleshooting recs?
I ran a quick diagnostic from bios but none of the tests hed anything to do with the battery so that felt useless, but at least all other systemw seem clear. Running upower -i on the device basically just showed that the battery is empty and didnt reveal anything about cycles or capacity.

i really like PHP. in my experience, its full of insane issues and functions called "doThingSecurely_final_FINAL". but it's a tool, like excel or hypercard, that lets a normal person make Web without years becoming a Web Developer. you could just throw it onto a server and make a view counter or whatever. just mash it in there in the HTML for some basic dynamic feature on an otherwise-static page. wow! then 'Developers' ruined it, like with javascript, by trying to use it to make actual software

the main thing that's good about the web as a medium, imo, is that you can just chuck something into a directory and then it will appear in web browsers around the world. you can edit the file and hit save and refresh. the magic that you feel is the core of the entire thing. and as far as i've seen, Web Development, as a discipline, has focused for the last few decades on systematically destroying that magic

I made it past this company's filter by the skin of my teeth, just to find that their round 2 interviews begin with an ai-focused interview so they can see how I utilize 'agentic coding' or whatever. Dear readers, I have never used coding agents or any of these shitty llm powered 'tools' on moral grounds. Im not really sure what to do here. I dont want to betray my morals, but I also want to get an offer, if only to negotiate with my current employer for a higher salary. Feeling pretty conflicted right now, especially given that my current work situation is not forcing llm use on me (though the tools are here as they are at most companies right now). Any advice greatly appreciated
(is #getfedihired an appropriate tag here?)

Poll, please boost for reach, I’m genuinely interested.

Do you use IRC?

Thanks for all the help y'all. Hope livessss on!

I keep seeing people describe the character.ai bankruptcy as the first AI bubble domino, so I’m glad to see some reporting on what’s *actually* going on here: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/10/disney-found-a-way-to-buy-character-ai-without-buying-its-lawsuits/

This is a way for Disney to buy the company without really buying the company, so they can avoid antitrust. It also gets them out of inheriting the active lawsuits. Character.ai has been through this once already - what’s left of the company is kind of a shell after Google hired key employees & licensed their tech.

Think it might be time to try this:

Technical writing, accessibility, mobile app development, Linux, sysadmin, desktop development, (Python/Swift/rust/C). Experience in team leading, accessibility testing, assistive technology training.

If you are or know someone looking for any of these skills, let me know.
