@adamgreenfield I just read Adam Greenfield's book on emergency response / mutual aid / anarchist communities, "Lifehouse". It was a book talk group among mutual aid communities in Western Mass. When done, I bought three more to give to friends. This is critical, timely material.
"Several European governments are confronting both high public debt and ageing populations. Policymakers will confront the unpopular choices of austerity, increasing immigration, or continuing to let debt increase. Because these outcomes are studied in isolation, the relative popularity of these interlinked policy options is still unknown. To gain insight into these trade-offs, we examine how the Italian public responds to alternative paths to debt reduction and test if citizens prefer austerity over immigration or are willing to relax opposition to immigration to avoid the material consequences of austerity in a constrained multidimensional setting. Our first experiment reveals that information about immigration’s fiscal benefits increases support for pro-immigration policies and improves attitudes toward immigrants. Next, using a conjoint design, we show that citizens prefer parties that reduce debt through immigration rather than austerity and that are more willing to accept increased immigration than ignore rising public debt. These findings provide insights into the interaction between fiscal policy, immigration, and austerity amid economic and demographic challenges, suggesting that sociocultural concerns can bend to material interests when voters are confronted with these alternative approaches to fiscal sustainability."

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-great-simplification-with-nate-hagens/id1604218333 #TGS #Johar The last two episodes of "the great simplification", this one and the "frankly" that comes after, required a lot of focus and multiple listenings, but go together and layout challenges and approaches to climate disruption that are really profound. "The ministry for the future" articulates in fictional form exactly what I see Indy Johar speaking about. I strongly recommend listening to both of these in order, twice!
"Social media algorithms amplify right-wing content against young users’ preference"
I finally re-found this study I read a few months ago, that deserves a lot more attention. It is, in fact, the main reason we should be moving away from big-tech social media: it shows more right-wing content than left-wing content, no matter the political leaning of the user.
Propaganda works. See more of something and you start believing it. And they know it.

A neighbor shared two short documentaries made by students about how the ICE invasion impacted students in Minneapolis. Folks on Fedi might like to see them.
The first one is face-to-face interviews with students at Roosevelt High, the place where Bovino and a bunch of unhinged agents stampeded school grounds hours after ICE murdered Renee Good:
I’ve seen some breathless reporting in the media about the situation in France saying it’s the biggest cyber attack ever and the result of a swarm of Agentic AI bots.
Reality: no. It’s a complete lack of security controls and negligent product development by the vendor.
"AI" is a failed technology, in the sense that it's neither fit for purpose, nor a likely path to its stated end goal of "AGI", but a lot of people's profits currently depend on pretending it's not. I am curious to see how long the hype will last once the Nvidia ouroboros ends and money stops being pumped into marketing.

Trump turns to Putin and Russia for diesel, before the midterms, during a war, where the USA is — apparently — on the Ukrainian side. Russian stocks spike. Sanctions? what Sanctions? Allies? What Allies?
Oh, and also on the same day that the USA sanctions the International Criminal Court which lists Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu as war criminals with warrants for their arrest.
btw. A famous South African anti-apartheid judge who helped declare the Gaza situation a #Genocide, won the Peace Prize today.
How’s that No Kings protest doing? Gonna do anything or are we just “waiting for the midterms” while you quietly smile at the price of fuel in your neighbourhood
oh and…. Something something something …. Public
executions.
where’s my everythings-fine meme?

Outraged Bronx residents flocked to the corner, chanting “Murderers!” “F— ICE!” and “ICE out of the Bronx!”
During one heated exchange, more than a dozen people grabbed and pinned a masked ICE agent against a wall when he got too close to the police tape lining the scene.
“Take the mask of P—-!” the residents screamed.
NYPD officers swooped in and rescued the agent, pulling him back behind the tape as federal agents created a blockade line

You know how there's those channels that show a fireplace burning? I'd like one that just shows Teslas burning all day with Christmas music in the background.
Started to watch the Netanyahu speech. I had dreaded this moment. Was curious why all teh applause when he was walking to the podium. I had been told he didn't get a warm reception. Then the camera turned to show the applause was for everyone leaving.

Network cameras have resumed shooting and distributing video of President Trump, one day after CNN — one of the five members of the White House TV pool — had its press access reinstated by a court order. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2026/09/25/white-house-tv-pool-resumes-coverage-trump-after-cnn-regains-access/
Instead of saying, "US Supreme Court lets Trump…" as if SCOTUS speaks with one voice, the media should specify who voted for this. In this case, it's the six conservative justices.
The unsealed motion for summary judgment in the NYT/OpenAI/Microsoft case is a banger.

@bmoreinis @corbden @gbargoud no no no, I strongly believe JJB was an insult against life itself while Tom Bombadil REPRESENTS life itself
@jackielovescompchem32 I suspect that's the plan regardless of what happens with Trump. We could have spent the last 30 years investing in getting off oil - instead we spent it hardening borders and investing in police states. Strongly implies the plan is cast in stone - long before Trump and thus, likely after him too.
eww. Hyrox offers refunds after Beijing poop incident https://runningmagazine.ca/the-scene/hyrox-offers-refunds-after-beijing-poop-incident/
Hyrox has just announced that it will refund race fees for athletes affected by last weekend’s messy Beijing event, which prompted criticism of the organization’s health and safety procedures. Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk soiled herself during the race on Sept. 12, but continued racing.
Although she won first place, Wietrzyk, along with Hyrox, faced backlash after images and video circulated online raised questions about why she was permitted to continue competing, and whether other athletes were exposed to contamination risk.
The organization has also updated its rulebook to allow race directors to withdraw athletes when bodily fluids (including blood, vomit, urine or feces) pose a welfare or contamination risk.
Thought for the day
The US will be very shortly paying the same per year in debt intetest as China spent building the largest high speed rail network in the world.
So when you wonder why you don't have nice trains remember it's because the US sold rich people bonds instead of taxing them.
PS: if you are wondering why US petrol and diesel prices are so high it's because it's apparently more important to export fuel at peak prices than add export restrictions and keep in country prices down.
