Does the US not tax cars based on vehicle weight? That explains a lot. But it makes a lot of sense: the tax is used to maintain roads, and heavy vehicles do more damage to roads.

@mcv @xs4me2 @VeroniqueB99 Dont know about the US but here in UK it’s based on car value/age and cost of repairs (nationality of car makes a big difference), CO/2 emissions etc.. [Someone correct me if I’m wrong on this]
