Because I walk everywhere and know this city like the back of my hand, it probably wasn't the best idea to ask me for directions like this: "Oh thank fuck mate, it's all p*kis around here, I'm just trying to get to the city centre, is this the right way?".
It was the right way. He just had to keep walking.
Instead he received convincing directions to go in the opposite direction and get completely lost. I didn't spend all these years as an anti-racist campaigner to miss such an opportunity. 🤭

@boffbowsh @yala Also the fastest way to reveal your abject ignorance of geopolitics! Such as the historic rivalries between India and Pakistan, or Arabs and Persians, or...well I'm preaching to the choir here.
Suffice it to say it's not a term thinking people should ever use. Especially not to complete strangers with the assumption they'll share your racism. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@yala @ApostateEnglishman I am assuming it referred originally to people from Pakistan, and evolved to be a deeply loaded and perjorative word for most middle asian / Indian or Arabic looking people. Does that seem correct?
I wasn’t aware it was as bad as that - I thought it was mildly disrespectful.

@GinevraCat @yala @ApostateEnglishman No, it's extremely bad. Every bit as bad as the n- word. Something not to be used under any circumstances (notwithstanding the right of south Asian people to reclaim it as their own if they want to do that, obviously not my decision to make, but certainly nobody who isn't south Asian should ever go near the word).
