    I have seen numerous people who sound like they know what they're talking about claim that LLM coding assistants are incredibly good now, making me wonder if I'm wrong and missing out on something revolutionary. Then something like this drops and I have to seriously consider that, actually, there are lots of people who have prestigious tech jobs and yet cannot tell the difference between competently-written code and and a barely-working unmaintainable shitball.

    Sometimes I think of B. F. Skinner and his pigeons. It turns out that you can train pigeons to perform an action by giving them rewards. But if you just give occasional rewards with no relationship between the arrival of the reward and whatever the bird happens to be doing at the time, what you get is superstitious pigeons.

    I mean, look, we've all gone "oh god, please work this time" at some code, but we don't actually write it in a text editor and try to compile it, except apparently now we do

    Warhammer 40,000 is satire, we're meant to find it ludicrously dystopian that the tech-priests try to keep their ancient barely-understood machines working by chanting at them and praying, but these days that's just a normal business model

    @raynerlucas i can confirm there are people who have no clue about any of this shit and still work in the industry. I used to be an IT journalist. Did I knew shit about computers? Hell no. The very first website I have ever written was written as part of my "how to write a simple website" article :D

    Good thing Google was still an useful tool then :Dog_hehe:
