Hey Fedi, is anyone else on here a survivor of severe Rh disease? I was born in late sixties, just before the rhogam could prevent the problem.

I was a third child, born premature and hypoxic and needed an immediate exchange transfusion.

I suspect it causes me memory and subtle coordination problems.

Never met anyone else with a similar background.

I just want to say: zero-hours contracts are viciously exploitative. Yes some people working for pocket money might find them convenient, but if you rely on the work then you have no security.

You can't say no to unreasonable demands because your employer might ghost you. This shit contributed to my partner's eventual disability.

The "but students want no-commitment work so they can go to festivals" thing is valid, but it needs to be addressed by giving workers MORE rights, not taking all their rights away.

Not many people know that demons are actually really friendly, helpful and often eager to please. They love being summoned and asked to complete tasks. Why else do you think they let people find out their true names?

They can be a bit hard to get rid of, but that is mostly because they hang about being helpful. It can be a bit awkward because they don't really understand mortal ways. Are we doing pronouns wrong?

Telling someone your preferred pronouns and having that respected can be validating, but it also gives away a little power. It's giving the gender Nazis an easy way to be mean.

What about modifying the first person pronoun? As a nonbinary person I am quite happy "I" is not gendered, but if you want to assert your gender, maybe using "Im/Ir/Ix" (or whatever) might be more useful. Instead of a once-and-done pronoun intro, you use the first person pronoun almost every other sentence. You are not depending on other people to adopt language.

Secondly, in addition to wildly gendering "I", why not normalize they/them for everyone. This takes away the linguistic platform for misgendering microagressions.

For me, gender has always been unwelcome and problematic. My apologies if I have not captured the nuances of pronoun usage from other perspectives. It is certainly not my intention to cause offence or invalidate any identity.

What is "going too far" in the context of academic research?

In Lovecraftian worlds, going too far means opening a gateway to Cthulhu, and the death - moral and physical - of the researcher. Stock doesn't mean that, surely? But it sure sounds like she does!

How can academic inquiry go "too far"? Surely the line of reasoning should go as far as evidence and logic can carry it? There is no rusting gate halfway along the track with a faded sign saying "Stop Thinking".

In Stock's world, there is. She never goes beyond the gate, because in her mind maintaining the orthodoxy is more important than advancing knowledge and ethics.

Kathleen Stock, the fascist in feminist clothing, was speaking about the problems she sees in academia in a Times Radio interview. She claimed the issue was that universities were full of neurodiverse people, and autistic people "don't understand ethics... broadly. They always go too far."

I think rather than deal with the severe academic objections to her many fascist enthusiasms, she classifies all criticism as autistic. and those people don't understand ethics. Not broadly, anyway. The poor misguided people just go down a rabbit hole.

But what is a "broad understanding" of ethics? I think it is a tolerance of contradictions. It is the ability to assign arbitrary weight to ideas. The sources say XYZ, but viewed broadly, we know XYZ is not relevant overall. My belief system is secure.

James Simpson invented the use of chloroform for pain relief in childbirth in 1847. The religious authorities of the UK were outraged, as the bible clearly says god cursed women to painful childbirth. Pain relief was heresy! Simpson received death threats and chloroform was considered socially unacceptable for years, until queen Victoria availed herself of the technique.

The religious argument was never resolved. Society simply decided it couldn't deal with the contradiction of the the church's holy book saying pain was a religious duty, and the head of the church choosing pain relief. So it became a non-issue.

I don't think people confronted their moral objections and decided that biblical literalism was harmful. Instead, part of their religious framework became too problematic, so it was simply reclassified as "wasn't important / don't think about it". Thereby enabling the rest of the biblical literalism to retain its ideological dominance.

This is neurotypical ethics.
