Looks like trados is currently on sale - probably as good a time as any to upgrade your perpetual license if you were looking to do so (support for trados 2022 will drop at the end of the year). about a 20% discount in my case of upgrading from 2022 to 2026. I was expecting something closer to 40%, so that was a bit of a letdown. Maybe there will be a bigger sale in Nov but I am not sure. No idea when the sale will end - I just saw it when periodically checking the prices

I ought to ask the agency I'm registered with whether it is worth upgrading because I haven't had any trados projects from them for quite a while now - they've mostly shifted to Phrase and I use OmegaT for all other projects (took a little while to get used to the interface and workflow but I like it quite a lot now, especially the ease of adding and editing source files and glossaries. I only wish it had a more robust undo/redo stack)

@mojilove I hope nobody ever wants me to upgrade my 2022 perpetual license. Even that I'm not sure whether it had paid for itself (probably has).

@larsimore My 2021 (iirc), and 2024 licenses paid for themselves, but I'm less confident about whether a 2026 license might do so as well at this point. Here's hoping that neither of us will need to upgrade!

@mojilove Man, I miss being excited by CAT tools 😅 I started my career with Trados, back when it was a macro inside MS Word. It was wonky and glitchy but also quite magical. After that I had a brief parenthesis on SDLX, because cheap clients loved the free client, but "format painting" was the worst idea ever. I then started using memoQ on my own will, paying it from my pocket. I made a deal with the translators in my team where I would shoulder the cost of their license and then scale it back over two months worth of work. The UI was always awful, but I loved all the features they added, up until they clearly stopped caring. There was an odd time where they got a new CEO and the updates were supposed to be called alphabetically after the seas of the world. They never went beyond "Adriatic" 😄. Then they quietly scrapped the whole thing and clearly just started rent-seeking, with yearly editions just being a toll booth to enter the servers. I quietly gave up renewing my license about two years ago. It seems to work for most projects, and if needed I can rent a temporary one online. I liked OmegaT but it misses the real selling point of memoQ: strong import filters from Excel. If I can't vacuum in some 35 columns monstrosity spread across 75 tabs, I just can't work in gaming, simple as that...
