Looks like trados is currently on sale - probably as good a time as any to upgrade your perpetual license if you were looking to do so (support for trados 2022 will drop at the end of the year). about a 20% discount in my case of upgrading from 2022 to 2026. I was expecting something closer to 40%, so that was a bit of a letdown. Maybe there will be a bigger sale in Nov but I am not sure. No idea when the sale will end - I just saw it when periodically checking the prices

I ought to ask the agency I'm registered with whether it is worth upgrading because I haven't had any trados projects from them for quite a while now - they've mostly shifted to Phrase and I use OmegaT for all other projects (took a little while to get used to the interface and workflow but I like it quite a lot now, especially the ease of adding and editing source files and glossaries. I only wish it had a more robust undo/redo stack)

It's that time of year again when I need to use Subtitle Edit - it just keeps getting better. I cannot overstate how happy I am that we have it and are not forced to pay for EZtitles or something like that.

Jazz guitarist Miles Okazaki has launched his Monkathon site about playing the entire oeuvre of Thelonious Monk in concert, and it is amazing.

A full four-set concert! Starting with one of my personal favorites, “Thelonious”!

https://monkathon.com/first-set/

And the notebooks! The generosity on here is incredible—I have paid good money for far less thinking on paper about Monk’s music than this. (Maybe he’ll get around to writing an actual book one day!)

It’s cool to see that even someone of Okazaki’s accomplishment has to remind himself to look at the audience. We’re all human.

#MotDuJour, perruque
« (1901). Fam.

At first I envisaged The Wall-like scenes of teachers in black coats and academic caps brutally putting down student riots in the street, but it turns out France is going to deploy them to schools, to educate. Probably a better idea

Something fast and grey has taken up residence in the undergrowth at the edge of our backyard. I saw it disappear into the foliage a few days ago, and a niece saw it the other day. (Practically did a touchdown victory dance when she heard that I’d seen it too, proving the haters [her siblings] wrong.)

Probably a mouse, but I'm still hoping for some kind of devious, low-nesting bird. One good thing about living in Japan and not Australia is that it's almost certainly not a terrifyingly deadly snake or funnelweb spider or something. Though I will probably NEVER get used to how blithe people are here about wading into long grass in the height of summer.

Italo Calvino: In my book I invented the invisible cities both as an exercise in beauty and as a metacommentary on the power of language alone to shape what one sees in the mind’s eye.

AI Bro: At long last, Claude has visualized the invisible cities from the classic pomo novel Don’t Visualize the Invisible Cities.

Incidentally, this is the interview. Surprisingly insightful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04zF3Y4kRWA

Interesting point I heard in an interview with a voice actor. He mentioned his work is not that hard in the moment because he has 25 years of experience and knows exactly what the writers want from him. He navigates it through his deep understanding of shows, writers and audiences. I feel that maps out beautifully to game translation. People always focus on characters and puns and funny accents. Which are important but fall inside a larger meta level of knowing what the real intention behind those words. Which -say- tells you how a large character in a narrative game has a lot of leeway for characterization, while a quip from an NPC in a tutorial should stay light and UI should be as unobtrusive as possible. I'm here to serve the game.

Si vous avez quelques #langues européennes dans l'oreille, allez tendre celle-ci pour écouter le papiamento, qui « trouve ses racines dans un grand nombre de langues, notamment :
de langues romanes : espagnol, portugais, français ;
de langues germaniques : anglais, néerlandais ;
de langues africaines ;
de la langue des Arawaks (les Arawaks Caiquetios étaient les habitants des îles à l'arrivée des Européens). »

Nice argument, but I’ve already depicted myself as the smooth, cool bouba and you as the spikey, agitated kiki

A weird mystery that bothers me approx. once a month: Every single guest post at Terry Tao’s blog includes the disclaimer “This blog post was initially written in a different file format and converted using AI.”

What does this mean? What format is everyone writing things in and/or converting them to? Like are people sending him PDFs made via LaTeX and he has to be like “Hey Claude, OCR this so I can paste it into Wordpress as plain text”? Or maybe they’re sending Word docs and he refuses to install Office or even LibreOffice so he has to send it off to ChatGPT to convert to Markdown?

*He said, after delivering said changes scribbled in pen. On an upside-down PDF*

Does anyone else get irrationally annoyed when some client's accounting dept comes back asking pointless changes to the invoices?

"Oh, you dated this September 25 but it should now be at least September 30, also there's a 2 cent difference on PO654687 and..."

Dude, my work ended at delivery, you're just standing in the way between me and my money. Just pay what I asked as soon as you physically can, it's not that complicated.

-We have multiple records with that name+surname combination, but we need to confirm that it's really you
-Oh trust me, it is
