The compromise was that there is an apparently rather unsatisfactory happy ending, but in countries outside the US the film continues and it is revealed that the happy ending was just the main character imagining it, while in reality he is actually being tortured by the regime. He is trying to use escapism to get away from his pain.
Within the US, on the original release they apparently just got the unsatisfactory happy ending as if it was real.
