Nov 6, 2026, 4:48 PMThere’s no reason for me to rush out a release that merely boots, when I can just finish the job, after all. Usage resets well spent

iOS 10 with working wallpaper!

Fixed a few things in the graphics renderer and now all guests hit a smooth frame rate, even up to iOS 10 😄

iOS 10 Podcasts still kinda works 🙃

I was right about the digitizer; the digitizer extends beyond the screen bounds and provides extra state for when a swipe begins offscreen. Notification Center, Control Center, and back-swipe all rely on this state — touch events coming from the screen itself can’t actually trigger them at all. Just another thing to model

(This offscreen-swipe effect first seen on webOS on the Palm Pre, afaik)

One full work-week of codex tokens later, I have the first ever comprehensive iPhone 5 emulator that can boot iOS 6–10 😎
Heads-up: when I contribute this back to qemu-ios, it will not include the device chrome or the qemu frontend hooks to trigger calls/SMS. Those are all personal embellishments that make me happy, not something the project itself was asking for

Meanwhile, getting a virtual camera driver up and running
Tcorsairstw@mastodon.socialNov 6, 2026, 8:36 PM@stroughtonsmith This thread is astounding.
Wolfgang LutzWLBORg@hachyderm.ioNov 6, 2026, 8:48 PM@stroughtonsmith is there currently a limit on which versions can run or is it just a matter of time?
- Steve Troughton-Smithstroughtonsmith@mastodon.socialNov 6, 2026, 9:11 PM
@WLBORg the iPhone 5 capped out at iOS 10.3.4. What I’ve been working on this week is an iPhone 5 emulation core. Ask me again next week 😂
gregatron5 votedgregatron5@social.lolNov 7, 2026, 12:13 PM@stroughtonsmith So iPhones and iPads can never actually lose the bezel completely? 🤔
- Steve Troughton-Smithstroughtonsmith@mastodon.socialNov 7, 2026, 12:19 PM
@gregatron5 well they could, but you’d have to inset the UI area from the screen bounds. If they’re doing a wraparound screen, that makes sense too
Jason Dillerjdiller@hachyderm.ioNov 7, 2026, 2:11 AM@stroughtonsmith I couldn’t remember when they went away but I was hoping for the reel-to-reel tapes. Probably died in iOS 7 I guess.
Mudb0yMudb0y@universeodon.comNov 6, 2026, 10:15 PM@stroughtonsmith wait, you figured out activation? Or are you just hactivating with a custom server / premade tickets / etc
- Steve Troughton-Smithstroughtonsmith@mastodon.socialNov 6, 2026, 10:21 PM
@Mudb0y it’s bypassing activation, don’t think it’s as complicated in a VM as it is on device
HococoderHococoder@mastodon.socialNov 7, 2026, 1:59 AM@stroughtonsmith how much are you spending on codex for all this?
- Steve Troughton-Smithstroughtonsmith@mastodon.socialNov 7, 2026, 2:03 AM
@Hococoder I’m on the $100 plan, and it’s taken a week, so $25?
- HococoderHococoder@mastodon.socialNov 7, 2026, 2:04 AM
@stroughtonsmith absolutely amazing. I have no real feel for the resets and the downtime between, but wild nonetheless. Great work.
