Nov 5, 2026, 7:32 PMIt might be a good time to remind Republicans that their party probably wouldn't have collapsed had they allowed Trump to be convicted in his impeachment the January 6 Capitol riot.

@UlrikNyman I'll be sure to let everyone know.

I envy your optimism, but I have to see that before I believe it.
SimplicatorSimplicator@federate.socialNov 5, 2026, 7:48 PM@mattblaze Also to remind Rep. Raskin that he shouldn’t have caved to conservaDem senators & should’ve called witnesses & extended the Senate trial despite them. It was Raskin’s prerogative
Khleedrilkhleedril@cyberplace.socialNov 5, 2026, 8:31 PM@mattblaze Even if they knew that with full foresight it would not have made any difference; they acted in the moment knowing that they could do shit with impunity for 24 months, and revelled in it.

@khleedril Huh? Biden was president, and congress was controlled by Ds.

@mattblaze Right. I'm getting recent history mixed up. I'll move along...
Mister WankoMisterWanko@mastodon.socialNov 5, 2026, 8:31 PM@mattblaze Sometimes you have to get pushed to the brink of disaster in order to realize what others have been saying all along: the Republican Party is a death cult.
firebreathingduckfirebreathingduck@vivaldi.netNov 5, 2026, 8:34 PMThe Republicans backed Trump after the insurrection because they didn't have anyone else their supporters would rally behind.
Nov 5, 2026, 8:55 PM@mattblaze the Republican party decided authoritarianism was the way to stay in power. Trump’s second term helped make that happen much more obviously and faster. For that I thank him as it means some voters, hopefully many, like me will never again consider a republican a viable candidate for any office.
Jack WinesnoIOBeforeBedtime@mastodon.onlineNov 5, 2026, 9:05 PM@mattblaze That’s a really good point.
MokhtarStorkMokhtarStork@zirk.usNov 5, 2026, 11:31 PM@mattblaze In general, for decades, the Republicans thought they were Romans from the Roman Empire.

or maybe they all get tried for treason...
DBlawyersgunsnmoney@mstdn.socialNov 6, 2026, 12:15 AM@mattblaze Too bad that Moscow Mitch is no longer sentient
Michael Slademichaelslade@mastodon.socialNov 6, 2026, 4:43 AM@lawyersgunsnmoney @mattblaze If only he’d been more thoughtful when he was sentient.

@michaelslade @lawyersgunsnmoney I think he was an extremely thoughtful and talented politician. Just on the wrong side of damn near everything.
Su_GSu_G@aus.socialNov 6, 2026, 12:29 AM@mattblaze
Yes, the lack of consequences did them no favours in the (slightly) longer term. Also prevented them (?) from seeking out higher quality candidates. And any self-reflection.- Nov 6, 2026, 4:20 AM
@mattblaze Jan 6 was the tail end of the presidency and is only a symbolic impeachment. The actual need was to ensure that he wouldn't get elected once more, either by treason charges or including attempts to overthrow the election results as disqualifying.
They had enough evidence for conviction, simply from large amounts of boxes in the Ped-o-lago bathroom.
- Matt Blazemattblaze@federate.socialNov 6, 2026, 4:31 AM
@arem The removal from office part would only be symbolic, but they could also have barred him from holding future office. And right now, I'd bet they wished they had.
Isaac Ji Kuoisaackuo@spacey.spaceNov 6, 2026, 5:10 AM@mattblaze That kinda smacks of concern trolling, and they abso-effing completely deserve it.
