    What liberals will never understand is that there is no going back. We will not return to a 'normal' America, if that ever even existed. We will get to decide between socialism and barbarism. We will run head first against the wall until we answer this question correctly.

    @ErikUden

    "normal" America is exactly what allowed things to get where they are now.

    At root, it's 'cuz we're running the beta test Constitution, and deliberately sabotaged it to get the slave states to sign on. That's why 70% of our senators represent 30% of the country. If it were balanced, the first thing Americans would have used their democracy to do is free the slaves, and that couldn't happen. So we ended up with a traditional European feudalism sporting a superstructure of bullshit democracy.

    The surprise is that the bullshit held together this long, rather than that it dissolved so easily.

    @ErikUden THIS. There is no through line between "before Trump" and "after Trump." The country is broken. We're gonna need to create a new country, even if its name doesn't change.

    @ErikUden I had a heated discussion at lunchtime with my extended family recently. Everyone - except me - claimed that the US could return to the rule of law, progressive policies and restore a good image abroad by the next presidential elections (!!!) if a Democrat got elected. I kept saying: it will take GENERATIONS to fix all the damage.

    And my take was ridiculed by everyone 🫠

    To be fair they also told me that I was overreacting and making too big of a deal when 🍊 was elected in 2016

    @_elena @ErikUden many people still don't seem to grasp that the orange man is not an exception in the US politics, he is the embodiment of it that has just stopped bothering with the niceties. People like Reagan, GHWB, Clinton, GWB even Obama and Biden were doing the same things (especially abroad), but were pretending that it's for some higher "good".

    @_elena @ErikUden i’ve had the same experience, but with my direct family members. I just cannot understand in any version of existence why people still think the United States is a special snowflake not subject to the patterns we see in history and things can just be basically rewound to 2022 if we politic hard enough.

    @_elena @ErikUden so they don't get that the current mindset outside the US is "even if the next president is a good person, what stops the next one to be another Trump?"

    @ErikUden It's not like Dems can flip the supreme court any time soon. Or reverse the gerrymandering. Not to mention the fact that they just don't play as dirty as the Republicans, which is all just a massive disadvantage for them.
