When people ask, "How can I promote my art when the world is going to shit"

I hear that as, "How do I have the right to make art when the world is going to shit"

    And...

We need art more than ever during such times. You need to be making art more than ever during such times. And promoting it is part of the process.

The whole Renaissance happened at a place and time where things were generally unstable, unjust, unsafe and crappy. Imagine if DaVinci, Michelangelo and the gang had felt like the bad rulers and the dire political and economic problems of the day were just too important, that this was no time to think about something as trivial and personal as art.

@charliejane Exactly this. I just started my first fundraiser on Chuffed and felt hesitant to share it while so much is happening. But seeing this thread reminds me that mutual aid is part of showing up. If anyone has tips for a newbie on Mastodon, I'd be grateful 🙏

@charliejane I have been trying to boost more posts about art over the past couple of years, not fewer!

I've followed a bunch of new hashtags to help with this.

The world has always been going to shit. Since the beginning of time going to shit has been the cornerstone of mankind.

If you're not going to make art when the would is going to shit, when do you believe it would be a better time to create and express yourself? 🤨🤷‍♂️

@charliejane yes the world looks like a collapsing stage set & we stand in the wings wondering whether it's still polite to perform.

But the question is a sleight of hand pretending to be about promotion when it's actually a quiet moral panic in marketing clothes: "how do I promote my art" being the socially acceptable form of "how dare I exist creatively while everything burns?"

A charming guilt. Always fashionable in eras of decline.
