    A message to young people like myself: look, don't put off getting a colonoscopy. It's easy, not painful or uncomfortable at all - maybe a little embarrassing but think of the fun you'll have telling everybody about it afterwards at the dinner table.

    as Dave Barry wrote, there are two possible outcomes: either they find nothing, which is great, or they find something and can do something about it, which is also great.

    (Mine went fine, thanks for asking, I'll spare you the details.)

    @shayman@cosocial.ca in Australia the government gives you free tests when you turn 50 (and I believe recently lowered the suggested age of encouragement to 45) to see if you might need one. I’m grateful for that, as I avoided a far more difficult or possibly non-existent future.

    @shayman Two things worth knowing:
    1. The most popular anesthetic for this procedure is Fentanyl. When the nurse told me this (afterward) I freaked out a bit, after all it’s killing people every day in my hometown; it had never occurred to her that this might bother someone.
    2. The cleanout PegLyte process is unpleasant and I have found it helpful to remember, toward the end of the process, that white wine is a clear fluid.

    @timbray @shayman if they offer the option to be conscious during the procedure, do not take that option.

    Because then it is quite painful and uncomfortable.

    Learn from my mistake.

    @bynkii @shayman Disagree. I have had a few of these and on several occasions have woken up and enjoyed the TV show featuring my squeaky-clean lower intestines.

    @timbray @shayman good for you? Mine was uncomfortable AF from start to finish. Next time am getting knocked TF out, that local did nothing.

    @timbray Fentanyl, huh. I did not know that, but next time I'll ask.

    White wine is a useful tip, thank you. Whoever put the 'Fruit flavour' label on the PegLyte bottle is having a good laugh. Whatever ‘fruit' that is the flavour of, I never want to find out.
