Although given how passkeys work, there’s potential to adapt them for SSH as well and it looks like that’s in the works.

Fun writing trick: the vast majority of the time, “that” is filler which can be removed with no other changes needed to the sentence.

Give it a try.

If you really want to stretch your writing chops, try to avoid adjectives.

It’s a lot more work, but a fun exercise in being more deliberate with your writing.

I’m greatly saddened by the desire to offload writing to various LLMs.

The Democratic party has so many issues, but in terms of actual attempted legislation, they’re trying to first, stop the harm the GOP has caused, second, undo that harm, and finally figure out ways to prevent that harm without blowing everything up.

Because folks think shit is bad now, a civil war + revolution (required to “tear the system down and build a new one”) would be infinitely worse, especially for non-cishet honkie males.

I’m really getting to the point where I put people saying there’s no difference between the GOP and the Democratic parties in the same bin as Lolbertarians and Greenies/Steinies: completely unserious and not worth taking engaging with at all other than casual dismissal and mockery.

Do they have a lot of similarities? Sure. But so do all businesses of a given size and field. But if you say that Apple and Meta are exactly the same, you should expect to be laughed at.

PGP, GPG, certs, every use of PKI has this problem. It’s not perfectly solvable, the best you can do is find an entity you trust who solves it in a way you like. As my use of passkeys is currently 100% mac/i(Pad)OS based, it’s easy for me. If I need to use them regularly on Windows/linux, then I have to find a different solution.

(It’s especially complicated for me as I work in an environment where I literally cannot have any form of cell phone/smart watch/etc. with me when I’m at work)

The only way to fix this is customer/consumer pressure or it causing problems tha cost enough money. This problem will always exist, it is unfixable for passwords, passkeys, PIV cards, etc.

2) managing keys. This one is more fixable, but at the end of the day, you’re going to have to trust the entity whose key management you use. Apple, Google, Yubi, MS, <long list of password managers>. Key management has been a problem for PKI forever, literally as long as PKI has existed.

There are two issues with passkeys, neither of which are caused by passkeys in and of themselves:

1) bad website implementations. This one will always exist, for fuck’s sake, there’s login pages that don’t allow pasting, limit the upper length of a password, etc. No one blames passwords for that idiocy, nor *should* they.

But the entities in the FIDO alliance can’t fix bad websites any more than keypass et al can fix “you must manually type in your password for more sekuretee!”

People hating passkeys are now defending writing critical passwords down on paper as good infosec.

Anyone using human memory as some kind of ultra-reliable data storage is too unserious to deal with.

Any system relying on human memory to function has already failed.

How to make password better:

Stop using them. You can’t make them better. It’s 2025, there are good, well-supported options for authentication that don’t involve passwords.

Stop using them, you cannot make them secure.
