I was searching for alternatives to 12ft.io because I wanted to read a Reddit comment (without logging in). First results were Reddit posts.
Anyway. https://byebyepaywall.com/ is very useful!
Gave me an *NSYNC earworm as well.

I have three defective VHS devices and one defective DVD player. I'm considering throwing them away. I'm kidding myself if I keep telling myself that I'll repair them one day. I'm posting this just in case anybody wants to have a go at repairing them.
They all have different symptoms. One is sort of playing but the picture looks bad, one isn't moving any tape. The Loewe is supposed to be a high-end consumer device and was professionally overhauled and working about three years ago. But I don't get a picture (from a cassette).
Shipping would be cheapest in Germany. Maybe I can bring them to you when I'm travelling.
Edit: Typos. Also, I have a #Betamax player(/recorder?) and a record player as well. Those are untested but probably not working.
Edit 2: Oh, and I have a radio from the 1950s that I've just repaired. It's a bit quiet. But maybe that was normal back then. No idea. I don't need it.
I wonder why still so many movies are shared as DivX and MPEG 2 and in sizes of 700 and 1400 MB. I mean other than old movies that simply haven't been converted.
I can think of two reasons:
I wonder how many of these devices are still in use. I'm thinking of outside of rich Europe. I really don't know. This may be the only tech available to more people than I realised.
@freakazoid I'm watching Pump Up the Volume right now. It just started to get out of control. They've determined the holder of the P.O. box. Had to think of you.
I always wonder whether you have your screen name from that movie of if it's just a think people use sometimes. I've never seen it anywhere else.
Which films or series do you know with a plot that is hard to follow?
I'm thinking of
There might be an element of intentional ambiguity. But for the most part I feel like the plots can be understood better by writing down their individual elements and connecting them.
Can you think of any movies or shows like that? Or something similar?
Do I want to attempt to repair this #retrocomputing find? Cleaning is one thing. Finding out where traces are supposed to go and renewing them sounds like an uncertain venture. But it would feel nice if it would really work!
It would be the oldest IBM compatible PC that I own.
Maybe I'll skip that step and eventually go from Linux as my main OS straight to Sortix.
I like that more and more people seem to realise that BSD is actually a good choice for a PC OS. It has quite some advantages over Linux and the more complex Linux and the software environments that are commonly used on it become the more interesting the BSDs will look.
I'm still too used to Linux to attempt a switch. A couldn't even bring me to like Slackware, let alone FreeBSD. I don't think there is any point in me trying NetBSD. But I'm glad to see other people on here do that.
WML might be an interesting set of limitations today where many people are dissatisfied with rich set of features of the modern #web and how they are used. I know there are very different opinions on which features we could do without (no JS, limit JS, XHTML, CSS2, parts of CSS3, …) and introducing another choice that's even incompatible with web technologies probably isn't helping the issue. But it might be interesting to play with.
I feel like WAP went past too quickly. While I did use it a few times just to check it out, it was at a time where I was too young too have any money for internet, let alone expensive GSM kilobytes.
Now WAP seems to be dead. I don't know of any live site. Or even a browser that supports it.
Is there a retro community that hosts WAP sites?
Is there an archive of old WAP sites?
Mushroom mushroom.
When I was growing up I didn't have a menu to select which OS to boot. I had to use fdisk to change the active partition in order to switch from Unix* to DOS or back. (Or switch boot order in the BIOS when they were installed on separate HDDs. But I was rarely so lucky to be allowed on an expensive computer like that.)
When I first tried Linux I was thrilled by the fact that it came with a boot loader that would let you add other OSs. Dual-booting was so easy. Linux (developers) seemed so thoughtful, considering the possibility that you might want to use other OSs alongside it. And MS just blindly overwrote the MBR without even asking.
GRUB (legacy) was a great improvement over LiLo. But nowadays LiLo's simplicity is kind of attractive compared to the >1000 lines of GRUB 2 config that every distro ships nowadays.
I bought solar. Finally!
I will be a person with solar before the year is over.
I will produce electrical energy. Possibly even more than I consume now, on balance.
I will try and mount them on walls with two ladders and another human. I have hope.
"Can you please take a selfie of us?"
"No."
The only correct answer.
(Optionally, do take a picture of yourself with them in it, too.)
