I'm in a jungle daze (Amazing track, btw.), so here's my tribute:
Back at the desk after the summer vacation. Now for the hard part: Digging myself out of a pretty deep motivation hole so that I can bill at least *some* hours this week.
In engineering we say "Good, Cheap, Fast. Pick 2"'. AI is when you pick Fast twice.
I was a bit miffed that we mostly had so-so weather solidly below 20°C for the most part of our vacation. In retrospect, maybe that was a good thing.
The temperature shock coming back wasn't great, though.

I'm on my way back home. I managed to somewhat limit my daily news intake during the vacation, but that hope that you log off, then come back and the world didn't regress further while you ignored it, that's not going to work for a while is it?
That being said, it looks like I won't come back home from Sweden on a stretcher and instead on me own legs this time, so I have that going for me, which is nice. (I had a very nice, mostly uneventful summer holiday. As planned.)
Was in den - auch gut gemeinten - Bekundungen und Medienberichten gerade kaum vorkommt: Der Schrecken erfasst gerade nicht nur die direkt betroffenen Menschen oder "uns alle".
Es geht eine Erschütterung durch die *queere* Bevölkerung, und zwar in ganz spezieller Weise, aufgrund ganz spezieller historischer und aktueller politischer Entwicklungen und auch aufgrund millionenfacher persönlicher Erlebnisse.
Ohne diese spezifische Erschütterung und ihren Kontext zu erwähnen, bleiben alle gut gemeinten Floskeln nichts als Abwehr:
Es geht ja um alle, also irgendwie um niemanden speziell, also muss und kann man auch nichts spezielles tun, schon gar nicht über die Queerfeindlichkeit unserer Gesellschaft oder gar über die miese Queerpolitik der Regierung reden. Das Problem wurde ja bequem ausgelagert und "wir" sind alle die Guten.
Wir queeren Menschen müssen unsere Erschütterung, ihren Kontext und alles wieder einmal Nichterwähnte wieder einmal selbst sichtbar machen.
Dafür sind die zahlreichen Mahnwachen und Demos so wichtig. Vielleicht kommt davon dann auch etwas in den Medien vor.

I’m surely not the first to come to this realisation, but the LLM industrial complex is to tech-life what MAGA is to politics: erode any and all trust in established institutions, people and practices for the benefit of the very few and worst people on the planet in the (poor) guise of freedom.
I bought @emilymbender's book ("The AI Con") as an ebook (non Amazon) today and the shop had two variants of the ebook which looked like the hardcover and the paperback, with the "paperback" being half the price.
I mean sometimes the paperback is almost like a rev 2 of the book, so that could be a reason , but I wonder if it is just the usual ebook publishing madness.
Looking forward to the book, though.
I keep seeing the "cars replaced horses" thing related to "AI."
People keep comparing "AI" to cars (positively) without thinking about the fact that cars were forced on people (GM bought up and destroyed tram lines, there were massive protests, etc), and are the primary driver of climate change that is currently on track to make complex human society impossible. Meanwhile, cities that weren't destroyed for cars, or that have reversed most of the damage, are some of the most desirable places to live.
Maybe we could take the car analogy as a warning. Maybe it could be a reminder to think about how forcing technology on people against their will can reshape society in a profoundly negative way.
The answer for cities has been to right-size transit. Eliminate cars wherever possible, maintain emergency vehicles and mobility aids, and find more efficient alternatives (bikes, trams, metros, and trains) where possible. I feel as though we can extrapolate from the metaphor.
We do not have to repeat the mistake of reshaping society around a single, oversimplified, solution in order to benefit a tiny minority. Perhaps we can actually choose the right technologies based on use cases, rather than hype or dogma.
Cars didn't replace horses. Cars replaced walkable cities, tram lines and mass transit, and children playing in the streets.
"Cars replaced horses" to the benefit of a small group of elite men, at tremendous cost to literally everyone else. When people say, "AI is the new 'cars replacing horses'" they are saying something very specific about their privilege and intentions.
Edit: I write AAA, but it should have been GM and related companies. Look up the "General Motors streetcar conspiracy." And yes, that means that "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was actually based on real events that you didn't realize were real.
I have no idea what the tax structure for gasoline in Sweden looks like, and I believe gasoline is too cheap everywhere anyway, but something must be deeply wrong when this stuff is around 37% cheaper in Sweden. Yip, you read that right. Last price we saw in Germany was 2,24 EUR ish for E10, Price for Swedish 95 (the closest equivalent) is around 15,54 SKr which converts to 1,41 EUR.
Again, tax may play a role, so grain of salt etc.
